The following week began with a strange air of anticipation for both Ethan and Sophia. The idea of moving in together loomed over them like a storm cloud, and neither of them was ready to face it. But their families were persistent, and avoiding the inevitable wasn’t an option anymore.
Sophia sat at her favorite café, her sketchbook open but untouched. She stirred her coffee absentmindedly, her thoughts a tangled mess. Sharing an apartment with Ethan Carter? The idea was laughable. He was neat, rigid, and far too serious for her taste. She, on the other hand, thrived in chaos—her apartment was a reflection of her creativity, with paintbrushes on the dining table and books stacked haphazardly on every surface.
Her phone buzzed, pulling her out of her thoughts.
Ethan:
Let’s meet to discuss the apartment situation. Tonight, 7 PM. My place.
She frowned, her fingers hovering over the screen. Meeting at his place felt too... personal. But avoiding the conversation wasn’t an option.
Sophia:
Fine. But don’t expect me to agree to anything ridiculous.
At precisely 7 PM, Sophia found herself standing outside Ethan’s apartment door. She took a deep breath and knocked, her nerves betraying her otherwise confident demeanor.
Ethan opened the door, his usual calm expression in place. He stepped aside to let her in, and she was immediately struck by the neatness of his apartment. Everything had its place—books lined up by height, a spotless kitchen, and even the cushions on the couch were perfectly fluffed.
“Wow,” she said, unable to hide her surprise. “Did a cleaning crew just leave, or are you always this... organized?”
Ethan smirked. “I prefer ‘efficient.’ Come in.”
Sophia hesitated for a moment before stepping inside, her eyes scanning the space. It felt too perfect, too calculated, and it was the complete opposite of her own home.
“Take a seat,” Ethan said, gesturing to the couch.
She sat down, crossing her legs and folding her arms. “So, what’s the plan?”
Ethan sat across from her, his hands resting on his knees. “Our grandparents won’t back down, and it’s clear they want us to start living together sooner rather than later.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow. “And you’re okay with this?”
“Not exactly,” he admitted. “But they’re getting older, and it’s important to them. We don’t have much of a choice.”
She sighed, leaning back against the couch. “This is insane. I don’t even know how we’d make it work. You’re... you.”
“And you’re you,” Ethan replied, his tone teasing. “But maybe we can find a middle ground.”
Sophia tilted her head, narrowing her eyes at him. “Middle ground? You, Mr. Efficiency, want to compromise?”
Ethan chuckled softly. “Stranger things have happened. Let’s start with the basics. If we’re moving in together, we need to set some rules.”
Sophia groaned. “Rules. Of course you’d bring that up.”
Over the next hour, they hashed out an informal agreement. Sophia would get creative control over the apartment’s decor, while Ethan insisted on maintaining a cleaning schedule. They argued over groceries, guest policies, and even thermostat settings, their personalities clashing at every turn.
“You’re really going to make me stick to a cleaning schedule?” Sophia asked, exasperated.
“It’s not that hard,” Ethan replied. “One day a week, and we’ll alternate tasks. That way, neither of us has to live in a mess.”
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress a smile. “Fine. But I’m putting up my paintings in the living room.”
“As long as they’re not too... chaotic,” he said, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips.
Sophia pointed at him, mock-glaring. “Don’t push your luck.”
By the time their conversation ended, the tension between them had eased slightly. They still had their differences, but for the first time, Sophia felt like they might actually survive living together.
Ethan, walked her to the door, his expression softening as he opened it. “This won’t be easy,” he said, his tone serious. “But if we can make it work, it might not be as terrible as we think.”
Sophia looked at him, her usual sarcasm replaced by a rare moment of vulnerability. “I guess we’ll see.”
As she stepped into the hallway, Ethan’s voice stopped her.
“Sophia.”
She turned, raising an eyebrow.
“For what it’s worth... thanks for meeting me halfway tonight.”
She smiled faintly. “Don’t get used to it.”
Later That Night
Back in her apartment, Sophia flopped onto her couch, staring at the ceiling. The idea of sharing a space with Ethan still felt surreal, but a small part of her couldn’t help but wonder what it might be like. Would they drive each other crazy, or would something unexpected happen?
Ethan, meanwhile, sat at his desk, his mind drifting to Sophia’s quick wit and the way her eyes lit up when she argued a point. She was frustrating, unpredictable, and completely unlike anyone he’d ever met. And maybe, just maybe, that wasn’t such a bad thing.
