As Taehyung stood in the corner of the dining hall, he took a steadying breath, steeling himself for the familiar routine. The Joon family began to arrive one by one, each of them filling the room with their voices, their laughter echoing through the space. But to Taehyung, it all felt distant, a world he couldn’t touch, no matter how close he stood.
His heart skipped a beat when Jungkook stepped in, his husband’s presence commanding, his gaze sharp and unfeeling. Without hesitation, Taehyung moved toward him, quick to take the briefcase from Jungkook’s hand. He clutched it tightly, trying to appear composed, trying to be the silent, “loving” spouse he had learned to be over the years.
They moved toward their bedroom in silence, Taehyung trailing a few steps behind. Once inside, he set the briefcase down and reached to help Jungkook remove his coat, his fingers light, careful to avoid any mistake. But as he eased the coat from Jungkook’s shoulders, his hand brushed against his husband’s skin, a momentary slip, a mere accident.
Before he could react, Jungkook’s hand came down in a hot, sharp slap, the force of it ringing in Taehyung’s ears. His cheek stung, a red-hot pain spreading across his face as he stumbled back, swallowing the yelp that rose in his throat. He pressed his lips together, forcing down the whimper, the plea that threatened to escape.
Jungkook’s gaze was cold, his eyes narrowing in disgust.

“Don’t ever touch me again,”
He hissed, his voice laced with contempt, as if Taehyung’s very presence was an offense.
Taehyung felt the words like a blade, each one slicing into him, leaving a raw wound that would never heal. But he stayed silent, his lips sealed, his head bowed. This had been his life for so long now — the insults, the strikes, the disdain — it had become a part of him. No matter how much it hurt, he had taught himself to endure, to bury the pain beneath layers of silence.
Nodding slightly, he moved to the wardrobe, carefully arranging Jungkook’s clothes for the next day, his hands shaking ever so slightly as he straightened each sleeve, each collar. Every movement felt hollow, robotic, as if he were an echo of the person he used to be, a shell molded by years of neglect and rejection.
When he finished, he slipped out of the room, closing the door softly behind him. He made his way back to the dining room, his heart heavy, his spirit weighed down by the familiar ache. The table was lively now, the other Joon family members already seated, their voices filling the space with stories of their day. Taehyung moved quietly to his corner, standing silently as they laughed and talked, never once glancing in his direction.
He caught snippets of their conversation — Joon Hee-ra, Jungkook’s mother, was asking her husband Seo-joon about his latest business deal, her tone soft and affectionate. Jungkook’s father responded with pride, recounting his success with satisfaction. Across from them, J-Hope spoke animatedly about his day with his friends, his voice bright, his eyes alight with excitement.
As Jungkook joined them, he slipped into his seat without acknowledging Taehyung, as though he didn’t exist. His husband’s face relaxed into a small smile as he listened to his family, his eyes warm, a softness there Taehyung had never seen directed at him. The laughter, the easy companionship, all unfolded before him like a distant dream, something beautiful he was forever locked out of.
Taehyung’s chest ached as he listened, his eyes stinging as he stood there, invisible. This was his family, his children, his husband — yet here, he was nothing more than a ghost, a silent figure who blended into the walls, unseen and unheard. He couldn’t remember the last time anyone had asked him how his day had been, how he was feeling, if he was okay.
Furthermore, he had lived this way for years, each day passing in the same rhythm of silence and solitude, his heart growing heavier with each passing moment. He wanted to speak, to reach out, to find some thread of connection, but he knew it was useless. In their eyes, he was nothing, a shadow that served and stood at the edges of their lives.
As he watched them, his gaze softened with longing, a sorrow so deep it felt as though it might consume him. He would have given anything, everything, to be a part of this — to be someone they saw, someone they cared about. But that dream felt farther away than ever, a faint glimmer on a horizon he would never reach.
Presence forgotten, his heart aching in the silence. He was a mother, a wife, a human — yet he was none of those things in this house. Just an empty shadow, waiting, longing, hoping for a love that would never come.
