“Why?! Why?! Why?! Who gave you the right?! How could you be so cruel?! Did I send you???” She screamed on top of her lungs as she continued throwing a fit.
But it didn’t take long before her legs gave way and she fell on to the floor.
Her savior quickly stretched out his hand and caught her by the waist before she hit the cold floor.
Lovett had exerted all the little strength that was in her.
Lucas silently watched as the lady wept bitterly in his arms, paying no attention to the bruises on his skin and his torn shirt.
Shortly afterwards, Lovett drifted off to sleep. She was still very weak.
It was a wonder she had survived…
Lucas lifted her in his arms and tucked her in.
As much as he fought the urge to, his hand grazed the lady’s face.
She was looking so peaceful in her sleep, compared to who she’d been a couple of minutes ago…
‘Only the heavens know what she’s been through.’ His heart twisted.
However, from now on, he’d protect her.
Lucas silently decided to take on that responsibility. A frown etched on his face, he departed the guest room.
In her sleep, Lovett muttered incoherently, “you should have just let me die.”
By the time Lucas re-entered the room to check on the woman, he found her weeping profusely.
At that rate, she’d die…
He stood transfixed in the center of the room, and a while later, he proceeded to the bed and sat on the edge.
“I lost my entire family in a ghastly car accident. My wife and our two kids… I was the only survivor. I was devastated. I wanted to end it all.” Lucas’ voice was solemn and the back of his throat thickened.
“I wallowed away in self-pity… Lost every will to live. I tried to kill myself seven times. Seven.”
By now, Lovett’s tears had ceased completely.
“My mum fell terribly ill due to this… I’d have lost her too, had I not gone back to my senses. Would my wife have liked it if I died too? How would my mom have taken the news of my death, had it been I succeeded one of those times? I'm pretty sure she’d have slumped and died on the spot. Poor woman. She doesn’t deserve that.”
“Ask yourself, what will you gain by dying? Will your death change anything? Which impact would be more—positive or negative? Think about it.” Having said his piece, Lucas straightened to his feet and exited the bedroom.
Several minutes after the man left, Lovett continued to think about his words. Most especially, the questions he asked.
What would her dying change? The evil doers would continue to live… enjoy life… her grandfather’s wealth… her marriage… She’d have died for nothing.
The man was right. Very right. She needed to live too. She had to. She must.
Lovett smeared her tears with the back of her hand and made her way to the bathroom. She took a long, hot bath. Washing away everything. Her pain…
After she was done, she dressed up in one of the clothes she found in the wardrobe and stepped out of the room for the first time in two weeks.
When she made it to the end of the hallway, she found her savior setting the dining table.
‘How did he know I’ll come out?’
Lovett shuffled across the living room and settled on one of the dining chairs.
The duo ate in silence.
Lovett’s eyes darted around, taking in every detail of their surroundings. Minimalistic.
Her heart twisted as she remembered the man’s story. To lose his family… must have been devastating.
“You live alone?”
Lucas looked at her briefly and nodded.
“Your mom?”
“She resides in the States.”
“Ah… I see.”
Lovett was about to speak again when she suddenly felt nauseous and got the urge to throw up. She scampered to her feet and rushed straight to the bathroom to puke. However, nothing came out of her mouth.
Lucas, who had followed behind, twitched his lips and helped her back to the dining table.
“Do you know?...” After he returned to his seat, Lucas gazed intently at Lovett.
‘Know what?’ She kept mute.
“You’re two weeks gone.”
“…”
Gone from where? From home?
Lovett fought the urge to ask and just simply returned Lucas’ piercing gaze.
“You don’t understand?”
She shook her head negatively.
“You’re pregnant.”
If a pin dropped right at this moment, it would be heard loud and clear.
Lovett was stunned.
She was pregnant? Herself??
Three years of marriage… Nothing to show for it. How come?
Two weeks… She and Ken hadn’t even been intimate at all in the past one month, So, how come?
Just then, it clicked. That night…
Lovett’s eyes widened, they were almost bulging out of their sockets.
Tears formed in her eyes and her hand subconsciously moved to her belly.
Over the years, she had been called a lot of names, ‘barren’ topping the chart.
Who could she blame? She was the only one who knew her husband always wore protection when they did it. She had thought he was sincere about wanting to be financially buoyant before giving babies a trial… So, she had wholeheartedly ignored the spites.
How pathetic she must have seemed to Ken back then. How gullible.
Hot tears trickled down Lovett’s cheeks as she caressed her belly.
No matter what the circumstance that led to her becoming pregnant was, she would have this baby.
Now, she’d got a reason to live and strive. Her baby. Her miracle baby.
Her miracle baby had given her a new life.
A hearty laughter escaped her mouth in between tears.
Lucas smiled warmly.

A few days later.
Lucas had just returned from a meeting when he found Lovett sitting on the sofa with a tear gliding down a side of her face.
He hastily rushed to her side. “What’s the matter?”
Heaving a bereaved sigh, Lovett passed her phone to him.
He went through what was on the screen and realized it was the news of a couple’s wedding that was set to hold that weekend.
“That’s my husband and my sister.” Lovett muttered softly, staring into space.
