The Only Poor Girl

For the rest of the week, Jinze noticed something.

Ever since the day she spoke to Aiyi, everyone began acting like she was not in existence.

Even Yulan acted like they've never spoken to each other before.

Except for Shi Jin who do say a few 'Hi' to her sometimes, everyone acted like she was not in existence.

What was going on actually?

Jinze tried not to think about it as she prepared for school that morning, she also never bothered telling Yimin because she already knew the answer he would give.

'You are going there to study, not to make friends.'

But it was just too severe, even Yulan?

Oh heavens.

It was 7:00 when it started to rain, while kids who were brought to school in big cars were already on their way, Jinze had to remain home, searching for a hoodie and an umbrella.

The street was wet, making everyone quite lazy, except for a few kids who went down the street for exercise when the rain finally stopped.

Upon arriving at school, it was already 07:50 and just as she had expected, Mrs Yao was out there, wearing a black heavy raincoat which seemed to be made out of a thick carpet, scolding the late kids at the top of her voice.

Jinze noticed that Mrs Yao scolded not the kids in cars, but the few who had to trek from their home all the way to the school, which kind of sounded absurd to her.

"You pauper!" Mrs Yao screamed at Jinze, her green vein almost popping out of her face. "What the hell kept you at home?" She roared, looking at her as though she was covered with mud.

"My house is quite far..."

"Shut the fuck up you dimwit!" Mrs Yao bellowed. "How dare you talk back at... Oh good morning Miss Aiyi, good morning Young master Jin..." She lowered her head as she greeted the two kids who just alighted from an expensive white car.

As usual, neither Shi Jin nor Aiyi replied to her greetings, they walked as though Mrs Yao wasn't even there in the first place.

"So," Mrs Yao resumed, after being snubbed. "Who the hell said you could come to school late?"

Jinze turned to exchange shocked glances with a girl who stood beside her, the girl also appeared to have walked all the way from her home to the school. Jinze could tell just by sighting the mud stained on her shoes.

"I am sorry, teacher." She meekly apologised. "I promise I'll come to school early next time."

"You better do," Mrs Yao snorted, walking towards the next kid. "You! Who said you could..."

Jinze walked inside the school gate with the meek girl, and initiated a conversation.

"This semester is kind of easy don't you think?" She asked. "Except mathematics."

"Yes," the girl agreed. "But maths is no problem for me, I study science." She added.

"By the way, I'm Ye Jinze, a new girl in class 10, nice the meet you."

"I'm Chen Jia in class 10 too, nice to meet you as well.

They both walked towards the classroom, with Chen Jia initiating another conversation.

"I got here last week," She began.

"Yeah, I think I came here two weeks ago and something like that..." Jinze replied.

"Are you here on scholarship?" Jia questioned, quite curiously.

"Yeah, yeah I'm here on scholarship."

"Really?" She exclaimed. "I'm glad I've found someone who's in the same level as me. A lot of kids in my class are acting like I'm not in existence." She continued.

"Oh yeah," Jinze chuckled, finding her words quite believable.

Seems like Jinze was quite lucky to get kids like Yulan and Shi Jin speak to her, seems like she was born lucky.

"Alright then, I'm off to my class" Jia smiled warmly. "I'll see you at lunch."

"Yeah see you later."

She opened the classroom door and entered, the entire kids as usual all turned to look at her, and began whispering amongst themselves.

"Uh, this girl again."

"Why do I feel like she is in trouble?"

"She should better leave this school"

Jinze ignored the eyes that followed her to her seat, and sat down. Bringing out her book from her bag, she decided to solve some maths.

"Hey," A bold feminine voice interrupted Jinze.

She turned and saw the blue-haired girl standing beside her chair, Li Siyu.

"Do you know that out of all the kids here, you're the only one on scholarship?" She asked, scanning the entire class with her eyes.

Jinze also looked around, the kids weren't even paying attention, they were all engrossed in their affairs.

"You're the only poor girl here," Li Siyu continued in a wry smile.  "So, you'll serve us all to gain our compassion." She twisted Jinze's necktie with her index finger.

Jinze took Li Siyu's hand away, and stared at her, she spoke with confidence. "Over my dead body."
