It had been a few days since Astria was brought to this big, strange building. At first, she had been scared—the walls were too tall, the halls too quiet, and the people too serious. But Ashley didn’t like being scared, so she decided to make the best of it. She had named the flickering light in her room “Twinkle” and whispered stories to it at night. She pretended the cold floor was a magic carpet and skipped across it, giggling to herself. Even when the grown-ups looked at her with cold scary eyes or spoke in hushed voices, Astria smiled brightly. She didn’t like sadness. Sadness made the world dark, and she liked the world to be bright. So, she did what she always did—she searched for happiness, even in a place where happiness seemed to have forgotten how to exist.
Astria
*Stepped out of her room, the cold, sterile air of the hallway greeted her*
The walls were a spotless white, the floors so clean they reflected the overhead lights. Everything felt strangely perfect, just like the world they had wrapped around her in the past few days—sweet candies, kind words, warm food. But as she wandered further, something shifted.
The hallways stretched long, eerily silent except for the distant hum of machines. She peeked into a slightly open door and saw a pristine white room, much like hers, but inside… there was a boy, lying still on a bed, wires and tubes attached to his arms. His skin was pale, almost grayish, and his lips were cracked. His eyes were half-open, staring blankly at the ceiling.
