~Chapter 5: What about me?~
~All alone again, surrounded by silence, where even the echoes have abandoned me~
Tae's heart raced with excitement as he stepped into the house, clutching his test paper tightly in his hands. For once, he felt proud of himself. His hard work had finally paid off, and he couldn’t wait to share the news with his family. With a wide grin on his face, he hurried to find his mother.
~Kim Taehyung~
Mom! Mom, look!
He called out, his voice filled with joy.
~Kim Taehyung~
I got an A in my math test!
He eagerly held out the paper, his eyes shining with anticipation, waiting for the praise he had always longed for. But his mother barely glanced at the paper, her eyes cold and indifferent. She rolled her eyes, her tone dismissive as she responded,
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
So what? You can do better
The words hit Tae like a slap in the face, the smile slowly fading from his lips. His heart sank as the happiness he had felt just moments ago drained away. He stood there, frozen, his hand still holding out the paper, as if hoping she might change her mind and show some form of affection or pride. But instead, she turned away from him, her attention already elsewhere.
Just then, the door burst open, and Aria came running inside, her voice filled with excitement.
~Aria(Tae's sister,FL)~
Maa, see! I got an A+ on my test!
She waved her paper triumphantly, her, face glowing with happiness.
Their mother’s eyes lit up as if a switch had been flipped. Her entire demeanor changed as she rushed towards Aria, her voice overflowing with praise.
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
Oh, my darling! An A+! You did so well, my precious girl! I’m so proud of you!
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
Tae stood there, his test paper still in hand, watching the scene unfold before him. The way his mother’s face lit up for Aria, the warmth in her voice—it was everything he had craved for so long, but it wasn’t for him. It never was
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
Look at her
his mother continued, turning back to Tae with a sharp glare.
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
She did better than you, as usual. Learn something from her, you dumb brat.
Tae’s chest tightened as the words pierced through him. His hands trembled slightly, and he lowered the paper, feeling the weight of his mother’s disappointment pressing down on him. He wanted to protest, to tell her that he had tried his best, that an A was a good grade, but the words wouldn’t come. They never seemed to matter anyway.
Just then, MinJae, their younger brother, walked into the room. His presence always brought a sense of authority, and Tae hoped, just for a moment, that MinJae might acknowledge his achievement.
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
What happened, Mother?
MinJae asked, his eyes sweeping over the scene
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
Look at your sister,
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
She got an A+ on her test. Isn’t she amazing?
Min-Jae's face broke into a proud smile as he turned to Aria.
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
Oh, I’m so proud of you, my Aria!
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
he exclaimed, ruffling her hair affectionately.
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
You’ve always been the best!
They all gathered around Aria, showering her with praise, their voices blending into a chorus of admiration. Tae stood on the outskirts of their circle, the distance between them feeling like a chasm he could never cross.
In a small, hesitant voice, Tae spoke up.
~Kim Taehyung~
I also got an A grade......
But Minho didn’t even glance in his direction. His attention remained solely on Aria, as if Tae’s words had vanished into thin air.
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
Mom!
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
Because of Aria’s good grade, I think she deserves a reward
Their mother nodded enthusiastically.
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
Yes, of course! Why not? I’ll take her shopping—whatever she wants!
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
What about me, Mom?
Min-Jae added with a grin.
~Kim Min-Jae(Tae's brother)~
I’ll come along too.
~Kim Ji-Eun(Tae's mother)~
Fine!
~Aria(Tae's sister,FL)~
Yess!!!
Aria jumped up and down with excitement, her laughter filling the room as their mother and Min-Jae began planning their outing. They were all so wrapped up in their joy that they completely forgot about Tae, who stood there, unnoticed and forgotten.
Tae watched them, the excitement in the room feeling like a cold wind against his skin. His A grade—the achievement he had worked so hard for—meant nothing in the face of Aria’s A+. His heart ached, and the sting of rejection cut deeper than ever
The laughter of his family echoed in his ears as they made plans without him. They didn’t see the hurt in his eyes or the way his shoulders slumped in defeat. They didn’t notice the tears that welled up but refused to fall, because crying would only make him feel weaker.
As they left for their shopping trip, Tae stood in the empty room, staring at the paper in his hand. The A on the page seemed to mock him now, a reminder that no matter how hard he tried, it was never enough. The house felt colder, emptier, without the noise of his family. But the silence was louder than anything he had ever heard.Tae crumpled the test paper in his hand, a tear finally escaping as he whispered to himself,
~Kim Taehyung~
What about me, Mom?
But there was no one left to hear him.
