Chapter 5.

"Hey, mom! There isn't enough chilli sauce!" I yell, intentionally.

"It's rude to yell in front of guests." She whispers as she places her head behind the door.

"Look! It's 8:30 am already! You got to hurry!" I exclaim as I grab her purse and hand it to her.

"I apologize for my daughter's behaviour. I don't know what has gotten into her!"

"It's fine, Mrs. Harper." He says. It's not shocking that he knows my father's last name that my mother has too. I stopped getting surprised since the moment he rung that door bell.

"Oh, please! Call me Lily."

Good! Now, they are on first name basis. What more is left? They'll start taking morning walks together at the park? I don't where I am going with this.

"I'll handle it fom here. He's a friend of mine."

"That's good! I'll take my leave then."

"It was nice meeting you, Aldrin!" She adds.

"Pleasure's all mine." He replies as she walks out the door. Look at him being a gentleman with that smug face of his. Jerk!

"What do you want? I thought you said that I had time till 7:30 this evening."

"I just wanted to say tick-tock." He says.

I drag him to my room upstairs. I wasn't sure if mom had left. I let out a sigh of relief as soon as the footsteps of my mother fades as soon as she closed the door.

"You could have said over the phone, you asshole!" I say.

"How would I get your phone number?" He asks as he smirks at me.

"Oh! You know that very well, mister. You could research on me to this extent that you visit me at my home, but you can't find out my number?"

"That's what I wanted to warn you about. Not long before it's not your house."

"Wait! Go into the bathroom!"

"Why would I-"

"Just go!" I say as I push him inside.

"I thought that I had forgot something! My car keys! Where's that friend of yours?"

"Making poop inside, I mean... excreta. Okay, so there is no sophisticated way of saying it. He's taking a dump."

"Okay. Bye, sweetie." She says as she pecks me on my forehead.

"Bye, mom. Have a good day!"

"You too!" She says as she finally leaves. Yeah, this time I ensured that she left cause I followed her all the way downstairs saying I wanted to make sure she didn't get hurt on her way from my room to the door. That doesn't even make sense! I come back to my room and stand in front of the bathroom before he comes out and starts sneaking around.

"No pun intended, your room looks-" He says as he comes out of the bathroom and I turn back as soon as I hear him.

"Too close! Can't move!" I say as I find him standing way too close to me.

"It looks like shit and those decorations are pretty much crap too!" Aldrin says after he moves away from me, looking at the walls of my room filled with wall paintings that I made when I was little.

"Did you think of that advice while shitting on my toilet?" I say as I clear thoughts from my mind. He's not a good guy, Soph. He's here to take your home away from you, get that shit yet handsome face outside your head.

"I was trying to be straight-forward and nice, but you were so mean, so I gave you a dose of reality check."

"What a commendable gesture! Thank you for your humble concern-"

"I give a shit to your toilet, not to you. So, no concerns given."

"Wow, so both me and my toilet has to deal with assholes today!"

"I know I should be offended, but that's a good one."

"I know, right? But, let's come to the point! Why are you here?"

"Do you need help in moving out?"

"No!"

"So, I think you'll be able to handle it all by yourself."

"What I meant was, why the heck would I be moving out?"

"I warned you earlier, either say yes and stay in this house or say no and live on the pavement."

"There has to be some other way out."

"Even if there was-"

"There is? I knew it!"

"Even if there was, I wouldn't do anything about it because I don't care."

"You're rude, you know that?"

"I've been living with myself for 25 years, so I guess would know that much about myself. So, unless you're goi-"

"For how long?"

"5 months."

"And what am I supposed to tell my mother?"

"That you can't do anything but fall helplessly for me." He says as he caresses through his hair.

"My mom knows that I'm not blind. She wouldn't fall for that lie." I say as I see his smirk fading. I hate lying to her, but I also want a roof over her head. It wouldn't matter if I was being honest with her or not, because my honesty at this moment wouldn't run our household.

"When do I make it official by signing the contract?"

"In my cabin at my office at 7:30 pm sharp."

"I just have to ask one thing."

"What is it?"

"Why do you have this obsession with 7:30 pm?"

"You eat chocolate pancakes with chilli sauce. You aren't one to judge. Be there on time cause I wouldn't dither to make you homeless."

"I know that." I say as I smile satirically.

"I'll take my leave then." He says as he walks his way out of the room and out of my house.

"That would be so much better."

"Yeah! For both of us, Sophia." He says. I don't know why chills ran through my spine when he said my name. Well, he is kind of formidable.

"Hey, you hear me?" I yell from my window just beside my bed.

"You came around yet, sweet peas?" A little boy yells from the window of the house just parallel to mine.

"I am too old for you, Jamie! Bring your elder sister!"

"It's just 14 years."

"I was in 7th grade when you were just an idea in your parents' minds, kid. Now, go get you sister!"

"Well, someday!" He says as he disappears from the window and I can hear him calling out her sister.

"What happened, Soph?"

"He was serious, Oliv!" I exclaim with nervousness.

I forgot to tell this earlier, Olivia and I are neighbours and that's how we became friends in the first place. The distance between our windows is about 1 metre, and because both our legs were too small to jump that distance, our dads built an overpass for us.

It's not all pretty, it's just plain white with railings for support. I still remember the time when we were kids and used to sit here watching the sunset with some popcorn and garlic cheese.

"Who? James? You know he's just a kid with big dreams which are 14 years older than him, apparently."

"I am talking about that Aldrin guy." I say as I stick my leg out onto the small bridge.

"What? You kidding me?" She yelps as she comes out too. She sits down midway and pats on the floor beside her for me to sit down and tell her everything about what happened in there.

"No! He was serious about me fake marrying him. He showed up out of nowhere a few minutes back."

"Why didn't you tell me he was here?"

"Why? So, you could get a selfie?"

"No! Maybe. I don't know, dude!"

"What will I tell mom?"

"You have to lie to her. I'll handle the rest."

"What do you mean?"

"You tell her that he's your boyfriend, he proposed and then, you just have to convince her to say yes."

"But I already said yes."

"That's why you have to convince her."

"And how would I explain the fact that I was dating someone all this time and didn't even say a word about it?"

"Your mom's working like all the time. Even if you were to tell her about this earlier, she wouldn't be at home."

"You're right."

"And I know you get nervous while lying, so I'll be right there with you. Want some popcorn and garlic cheese?"

"It's not sunset yet."

"Do we need a reason to eat it now?"

"Nah! I am just kidding. I'll bring the cheese." I say as I get back into my room.

"I'll bring the popcorn!" She yells.

I guess I'll have to act like I'm married to him. Obviously, only when the Adoption Centre visits take place and till the process of adoption is completed. Pretending in front of loved ones when I don't even like kids.

I go down to the kitchen and open the refrigerator to look for the cheese dip.

"Found it!" I say as I take it out from the back of the refrigerator and heat it over the gas stove.

"Are you done?" Olivia yells from the traverse.

"Coming!" I say as I sprint upstairs. I reach there and we talk for 2 hours straight.

Aldrin's POV:

I pick up my phone to call as I shut my laptop and move out of my cabin.

*On call*

"Is something wrong with your phone?"

"Good morning to you too, mom." I reply.

"How come you never call?"

"I'm good. How are you?"

"You would know how I am if you would call me often!"

"I'm sorry, mom. I just don't have enough time."

"Not enough time for your mother?"

"Mom! I want to tell you something important."

"You can tell me anything, sunshine!" She yells on the phone.

"Neighbours might be listening, mom!"

"As if you set up a good reputation for yourself, always jumping off of the balconies of these neighbours without your pants on."

"Mom!"

"Oh! Come on! I get to talk to you once in a blue moon. Can't I even crack some jokes with mah old pal?",.

"No. We've got to catching up on a lot of things."

"You're still the same as you were when you were a kid, always straight-forward."

"I'M GETTING MARRIED."
