"No! No way! Not at all! I'd rather die than stooping down to that level just to pay the money!" I retort, slamming my fists down onto the table in a fit of rage.
"I am talking about fake marriage."
"Huh?" I ask, confused as I rub my fists. I shouldn't have hit the table that hard.
"I've been trying to adopt a kid for some while now and the people at the adoption centre have been keeping me on hold. When I finally got the chance, they said I need a partner to adopt one."
"You look like you're 26 or something. Why do you want a kid?"
"I am 25, thank you. You just need to that it's urgent and nothing more about it."
"You would be needing me, right? So, I need to know."
"I'm sorry, I don't like kids enough to have one."
"Then, it's a good thing that I'm not asking."
"There are other girls better than me who might actually be willing to marry you unlike me."
"Well, you happen to be in my debt and I suggest that this is a way you can get out of this."
"I'd work for you my whole life, but I still wouldn't do this. You could torment the people over whom you have control."
"I could, but I choose you." He says as he lays back on his seat.
"So, you'll force me into marrying you?"
"Pretty much, yeah!"
"I'll pay off the debt, I said so."
"What if I say, I need the money right now?"
"Then, that's your problem!"
"You do it or I'll do what's necessary to get things done."
"Ooh! I am scared!"
"By some research done by my assistant, it's $9,000, right?"
"$9,000?"
"Your house's price. It's pretty old and cheap, don't you think so? Also, you have a working mother! Your mother would have to sell it off and you'll still owe me $1,000! She wouldn't blame you, but deep inside you'll always know that it was your fault. Your mother's happiness being ripped apart at the cost of what? Your whims and fancies getting fulfilled."
"What are you talking about?"
"The money doesn't matter that much, but the adoption does. I'm in a desperate state right now and I will crumble your life if I need to. You have time till 7:30 pm tomorrow, if you decide anything, I'll show you the contract that we'd be following. Now, leave."
"I wasn't going to stay here anyway." I say as I turn back and walk ahead so that I can process all the things that have happened to me today.
*Bump*
"I didn't see the transparent glass door. Next time, maybe replace them with translucent ones?" I add as I walk out. Jesus! This guy has some weird obsession with 7:30 pm.
This day is even worse than the time in kindergarten when Lily Petsch won first place in the Poetry competition and I won second place. Her poem was about potty training. Her topic was so kiddish, and I am going to completely ignore the fact that we were actually kids. God! I hate it when such things happen to me.
Also, I wonder why he's not telling me why he's willing to adopt a kid. I mean, he could do that by the usual process. Since when did adopting a kid became an urgency? I know that I am not exactly a friend to him, hell, I'm hardly an acquaintance, but if I'm involved, I need to know. After all of this, I could think of only one person with whom I could pour my heart out openly, Olivia which is why I call her immediately.
*On call*
"What's up P-Dawg?" Olivia asks as she still thinks that I am working at McQuick-Pick right now.
"I'm fine." I say as I walk into the elevator and press the ground floor button.
"Say it."
"No." I say as I reach the ground floor and walk out towards the exit.
"I know you want to!" She insists.
"What's up O-bro?" I drawl.
"What happened?"
"The multi-billionaire, Aldrin Davis-"
"Oh my god! I've been waiting for this day since 1970!"
"That's 25 years before you were even born!"
"I mean I always wanted to be a part of a billionaire love story where billionaire meets girl, they fall in love and then they move in with the girl's best friend."
"I've never heard of the last portion of that story."
"I knew this day would come."
"What are you talking about?"
"You'll marry him alone, you won't move in with me and then you'll forget about me."
"The last part is so not true and the first two aren't true either. However, that man did ask me to marry him."
"How did he propose? Tell me everything! Don't spare even a single detail!"
"I got the job, took takeout, bumped into a motorcycle which crashed into an expensive car, thus breaking its door. Owner is asking for money, I don't have that kind of money on me. Aldrin Davis is the owner and has asked to me to fake marry him so that he can adopt a kid and with that, my debt will be forgiven."
"Wait, what? So, this isn't a love story and instead this is a crisis?"
"Yeah, pretty much."
"Don't tell me that you're actually considering this as an option!"
"No way!"
"What else did he say?"
"He threatened me to sell my house. That was fake, I know it."
"It better be! So, you're not at the McQuick-Pick?"
"No, and about that. Can you pick me up, please?"
"Where are you?"
"In front of the Davis Corporation building. It must be 10 minutes from your place."
"Actually, it's 30 minutes from my place, but I'll be there before you know it! O-bro is out!" She says as she ends the call.
I certainly feel a lot lighter knowing that I told Olivia about it, but I don't know what I'll tell mom.
Aldrin's POV:
"Aubrey, get me a coffee." I say.
"Yes, sir."
"I could have brought that for you, sir." Tanya says.
"You could have, but you're fired."
"What? Why?"
"Do I have to explain myself?"
"I'm sorry, sir."
"You know the place pretty well?"
"Yes."
"Then you can very well show yourself out!" I say in a stern tone as she walks out the door.
"Your coffee." Aubrey says as she places the cup of coffee over my desk.
"Aubrey, for long how long have you been an intern?"
"3 months, sir."
"You're now hired as my assistant. Your first task is to dig up more information about Sophia Perfect who was recently hired at McQuick-Pick Restaurant and hand them to me by 8:30 pm."
"I'll get started with that right away, sir. Anything else?"
"Nothing at the moment."
"Also, Mr. Hans is here to talk to you."
"Let him come in."
She walks out the door and there's the guy with curled black hair and green colored eyes which are most of the time high on weed.
"Aldrin, my man!" He says as soon as he walks in.
"Where have you been all day, Lucas?"
"I woke up at 3 pm and I ate till 5 pm. That's pretty much how spent my day."
"It's good that your dad manages your hefty lifestyle or you'd be on the road by now."
"What're you so tense about?"
"Nothing."
"I heard you that you fired Tanya. Your mother told you to give her a chance. She's her best friend's daughter."
"She had it coming."
"And may I ask how?"
"It's a long story."
"I have all the time in the world."
"But I don't because I have a company that unfortunately isn't going to run itself."
"Well, did you here from the Adoption Centre?"
"Yeah, they called earlier this morning."
"What did they say?"
"They think that I won't be an eligible parent."
"Why not?"
"Apparently, I can fulfill the wants and desires of the kid, but I would be needing a partner who would be taking care of child."
"Just hire a babysitter."
"Why not adopt the child and then admit it into a creche?"
"That sounds good too!"
"You know that your brain is so empty that I could build my own city in there?"
"Stop messing around."
"Alright."
"Why are you so determined to have a kid? Live your life, man. Kids make one so responsible that they miss being horrible."
"You don't need to know."
"You know you can tell me."
"Can we talk about something else?"
"Okay. Who's Sophia Perfect?" He asks as he changes the subject.
"What about her?"
"I heard you talking about her too. Maybe I can help."
"I'm thinking she can help with this."
"Don't tell me you're doing this with a stranger."
"I want to keep it like 'no strings attached'."
"What if she doesn't think the same way?"
"SHE'S NOT LIKE OTHERS."
