Sister Moments
“Can you not?” Nora asks me.
“Can you think?” I tell her.
She looks at me like she’s tempted to strangle me, but she knows better, and she knows I’m right. Seated in our living room with the rest of our sisters we all feel the tension in the air.
“Just because you're the oldest in our family doesn’t mean you know everything! It doesn’t mean you know better than the rest of us!” Nora screams.
I hear the sound of thunder booming outside, and we look over to our youngest sister Bree knowing it was her, her power of the season will activate at times due to her emotions. Ophelia, our middle sister walks over to her rubbing soothing circles on her back sending out her healing powers into Bree to calm her down. Our second eldest Tish glares at Nora.
"Calm down Nora, you know how Bree gets when we scream," Tish says, warning Nora.
"Make me," Nora says, gritting her teeth in annoyance, challenging her.
Tish slams her foot on the table in-between us and Nora, taking her stance, as she releases her wings of fire, making them turn black with anger, accepting the challenge. Nora begins to stand as well, taking out her hair pin and pricking herself deeply with the oozing blood transforming into a blade. It begins to storm outside, and the entire house begins to shake, lights flickering, furniture rattling. Bree is getting anxious again. Ophelia puts her hand gently on Bree's head calming her once again, while grabbing her own head out of irritation. My left eye begins to twitch in annoyance.
"SIT!!" I command.
Both of them automatically stop, retracting their powers, and begin to sit down as they were told. Nora grits her teeth again, hating when I use the power of the leading sister, even though it's not my only power, I can use it to stop any type of conflict between us if needed, and I don't just have this power because I'm the oldest. In order to have this power, you have to be the most responsible, trusting, level headed, and most of all not use the power for unnecessary reasons. Which would be considered a derogatory breach of power. That's why I have it. I reach over to Bree and run my hands through her thick, nappy, brown, hair. The whole room is quiet, with tension in the air.
"Nora…try to understand that this is more than just knowing everything because I'm the oldest. Even though I'm the oldest, I still learn something from all of you mostly everyday. The point is what you’re thinking about doing is complete madness, and could put the rest of us in trouble. We can’t make deals with the devil,” I tell her.
“He’s not a devil!” Nora exclaims.
“He has the essence of one,” I say back slowly losing my patients with this.
“How do you-
“Because we all sensed it,” all my sisters say to a tantrum throwing Nora.
“Come on Nora, you have the sharpest senses out of all of us,” Ophelia says.
“Exactly you have the power of a blood warrior, we all may be familiar with our senses enough to tell danger, but yours is of that of an experienced warrior,” Tish says.
“In other words we know you sensed it too, you’re just in denial,” I tell her.
“Shut up!” Nora pouts.
“How the heck did we even end up having this ridiculous conversation,” Tish says, rolling her eyes.
“I'm really going to kill you Tish,” Nora says, grinding her teeth in irritation.
“You’ve said that plenty of times and yet you still-
“Bro can y'all shut up, damn y'all are acting more childish than daycare children,” Ophelia says annoyed.
The room goes silent.
“Damn,” I say, rubbing the back of my head feeling sorry for their emotional blow.
“Nora, have you ever thought that if you made a deal with that devil how mother and father would have felt because they feel like they've put you in pain when they couldn't help the situation?” Ophelia says.
Tish whistles.
Dang that might hit home.
Nora is silent.
“I'm sorry,” Nora says.
“You always are, miss hotheaded,” I say walking off, ending the discussion.
