The First Class

“Alright everyone, we have a new student today, her name’s Emila Hilmen, please make her feel welcome here.”

The teacher waved her hand for me to walk in the room.

I held my books low and slowly walked into the huge room. I glanced at everyone staring at me. A few girls looked disgusted and so did a few boys, some were whispering while others stared silently.

Yep, I’m gonna hate it here.

“Hi,” I said hesitantly.

The teacher laughed, “So you’re going to be the class clown huh? Well in that case, you’ll have to sit near the front won’t you? How about you sit next to Julia?”

A girl stood up and smiled, “Hello deskmate! Welcome to the school, I hope we can be good friends.”

“Yeah whatever,” I agreed.

Ew, I’m such a pushover.

“Alright go sit down now,” the teacher pushed me to the desk next to Julia.

I set my books down and pulled my hair into a bun before sitting down.

“So, what school did you go to before this?” Julia asked.

“I was homeschooled.”

“Oh how terrible! You must have had no friends, well you have one now!”

I sighed sadly and opened my books ready for Julia to shut up and learn.

“So Emila, what’s your next class? I can take you there!” Julia giggled.

“Spanish,” I said, “Why are you so giddy?”

Julia held up her hands making peace signs, “Positive vibes are amazing aren’t I right?”

“I guess?”

“Oh I almost forgot,” Julia pulled out a piece of paper from her bookbag, “We are looking for more student council members, you should totally join!”

My eyes widened, “Oh I can’t, I don’t do student council.”

“Oh come on, just come to a meeting, just try it out,” Julia pouted.

I sighed in defeat and took the paper, “We’ll see.”

She jumped excitedly, “Yes! Oh we are going to have so much fun!!”

Julia ran up to me and hugged me tightly lifting me off the ground, she was surprisingly strong.

“Julia, let me go…”

She laughed and released me, her dark bangs were messed up from the excitement.

She mixed it before taking my hand and leading me to my next class.

“Hey, can’t we slow down? There’s no rush,” I complained.

“No silly, You’re new so you need to get there early!”

Right I forgot about that..ugh that means the teacher has to introduce me again, so troublesome.

“Ms. Logann, you have a new student today!” Julia yelled.

“Oh it’s you Ms. Kayde, who’s the new student?”

Julia pushed me forward and the teacher looked me up and down with a smile.

“You’re so beautiful, the boys must be all over you already!” Ms. Logann exclaimed.

“N-No not really…” I mumbled, blushing a little.

“You’re too modest, you just need to pay more attention, I’m sure the boys are all drooling.”

I scratched my neck and gulped, she was wrong, no one likes me, the only one whos even nice yet is Julia, and I’m pretty sure she doesn’t like me either.

“Well class is about to start, why don’t you sit here until everyone gets here?”

Ms. Logann pointed to a stranded chair by the window in the front of the room.

I walked over and sat as Julia waved goodbye.

I breathed slowly bracing myself for everyone’s eyes to be on me again, a sophmore coming as a new student near the end of the year is rough…

I tapped my feet on the ground and kids filtered into the classroom, none seeming to notice me. The only one that did was Jacob.

I rolled my eyes once I saw him.

Why him of all people? I would have even preferred the blondie…

The bell rang and everyone sat down right away, I crossed my legs waiting to be seated at a desk.

Ms. Logann stood before the class and spoke, “So how was everyone’s weekend?”

“Good,” everyone replied in unison.

Ew, this class will be boring.

“Well mine was pretty good, it was my husbands’ birthday as most of you know,” the teacher turned and winked at me, “Anyways, we have a new student today, I expect all of you to treat her nicely, she was homeschooled before this so she is new to this atmosphere, so be patient please.”

Dear god Logann, I’m not some hopeless puppy, I’m fine.

“Everyone, this is…” she looked at me waiting for me to announce my name.

I sighed before standing in front of everyone, “Emila Hilmen.”

Some guy from the back blurted, “Are you Archer Hilmens’ sister??”

I froze, he knew him..this will be interesting.

“...Yes, sadly,” I replied.

The class laughed at me for a few seconds before hushing up.

The sound of a slamming door caught my attention.

“Jesus christ Jameson! If you come in late at least be more discreet, you disturbed the whole class!”

“Whatever,” the boy replied sticking a sucker in his mouth.

The guy with short black hair stared at me while walking to the desks, I stared back curiously.

“Shawn, this is Emila Hilmen, she’s a new student, be nice to her,” the teacher ordered.

The guy rolled his eyes and kicked his feet on top of his desk.

I tilted my head, there might be something interesting in this school after all, not everyone here is a little coward.

“So, since you were homeschooled, I’ll give you an exception, does anyone here know her?” the teacher asked the class.

I crossed my arms impatient, after a moment somebody yelled, “I do…”

I looked back at everyone and saw Jacobs’ hand raised.

Great…

“Emila, you’ll be sitting next to him, and Josie you will have to move in the back, is that okay?” Ms. Logann asked.

“Really? I’ve literally sat her all year, why do I have to move?” the girl complained.

“The more you should be bored of it, now move to the back row please.”

The girl huffed before gathering her books.

I stared down Jacob as I walked to the desk next to him.

“Why would you tell her you knew me?”

Jacob looked away nervously, “She was gonna make you sit next to emo boy over there,” he pointed to Shawn sitting in the back, “I saved you, you should be thankful.”

“That’s better than sitting next to you.”

“Hey!” Jacob scowled, “If you and I were friends then you’d see I’m not so bad!”

I tilted my head and exposed him, “The first thing you did when we met was flirt with me. I don’t want any friends like that, I don’t even need friends to begin with.”

Jacob frowned, “Whatever, but we’re deskmates now, so we have to at least get along.”

I stood up, “Ms. Logann, can I switch desks?”

Jacobs eyes widened before he hid his face with his hands.

The teacher tilted her head, “Is something wrong with that seat? I thought you knew each other?”

I peeked at Jacob who was crunched into a ball from embarrassment.

A little part of me felt bad for making him feel embarrassed, but at the same time I was glad I did.

“I can’t see the words on the board too well,” I lied.

I knew exactly what the board said.

“Oh, if that’s the case then I’ll just make the words larger so you can read them easier,” she smiled.

I sighed and sat back down leaned on the desk resting my head in my arms.

“You can look up Jacob, I’m still here…”

He slowly moved his head and peeked at me, “I knew you couldn’t leave all this behind.”

I gritted my teeth, “Don’t push your luck loverboy.”

He gulped and turned to the front and started to take notes.

Ugh, I’m so hungry..I wish mum could make me food…

My heart ached once I remembered she couldn’t, she was gone. I gripped my shirt tightly and tried to steady my breathing.

Jacobs’ hand grazed up and down my back slowly in an attempt to comfort me, but it wasn’t helping.

“So uh, are you eating with us at lunch?” Jacob asked.

“No.”

“Why? You’ll be alone and it gets boring with no one.”

“Look Jacob, I only need to talk to you for Spanish class, other than that, just leave me alone.”

I stood up and grabbed my books before walking to the door.

I took my time walking to my next class, it was close anyways.

I stopped walking and closed my eyes breathing slow. Mum always said that when I was overwhelmed or scared, to breath and tell her I need help.

“I need help mum…” I mumbled holding my mouth.

I tried to imagine her running into school and taking me away from this awful place. Taking me back home with her, and hugging me tightly again.

But it wasn’t a reality.

My eyes opened as someone pushed me forward, my arms flailed in front of me trying to catch my balance, I leaned backwards steadying myself.

“Watch where you’re going!”

I turned and saw Archer staring me down with his arms crossed.

I glared at him and clenched my fists.

“You asshole, who would’ve thought you’d go here of all schools,” I grunted.

He smirked, “Being a newbie is hard isn't it? I can only imagine how many people are judging you right now, it’s your first day and you’re already causing a scene.

I glanced around and saw people gathering around us, “I couldn’t give 2 shits about what they think.”
