The wind seemed to take the notes of the song away, leaving a girl standing out in the cold with a wistful heart. Her name was as Bao Mi, a former college student who quit to aid her brothers to their former glory.
Chapped lips with calloused hands and a thin sweater that was bigger than her. She tried to warm her hands with her breath as she held a plastic bag.
“It’s so cold.”
As Bao Mi looked up at the big screen, she saw her three older brothers who stood proudly as they once had before. They had announced that the person that they felt they had owed the most to was their younger sister.
Hearing this, she felt sad and tearful. She sniffled with the bag of vegetables in her calloused hands, wearing a worn out red scarf. She looked down at the food in her hands.
“I guess I won’t be making dinner for them anymore.”
Before she could wallow in her sorrow, Bao Mi looked up to see a stranger walking across the open area without noticing a car racing toward him. In a moment of foolishness, she yelled out to the stranger as she ran toward him.
“Watch out!”
The stranger looked up to her in surprise as Bao Mi pushed him out of the way, getting herself hit by the car instead. The snow fell as her blood drenched the pavement, the stranger got up to take a look at her.
“H-hey! Stay awake!”
Bao Mi couldn’t hear him anymore as she looked up at the sky, feeling her senses going numb. ‘Am I dying so early? But why? I haven’t even started living yet.’ As she had this last thought, she closed her eyes hearing a voice.
“Miss? Miss?”
Bao Mi opened her eyes to see a highschooler looking at her, making her look at her phone.
“My goodness! I almost missed my stop!”
Bao Mi looked up at the highschooler and smiled to her gently.
“Thank you for waking me up!”
The highschooler nodded before she handed her a handkerchief.
“Miss, here you go.”
Bao Mi looked up at the highschooler with confusion as she took the handkerchief. Before she could ask why, the highschooler took out her compact mirror to show Bao Mi what she looked like.
“Oh!”
Bao Mi was surprised to see herself crying as she looked at herself. The highschooler chuckled at her reaction.
“Miss, I don’t think you want to get off the bus with tear marks on your face.”
Bao Mi looked up at the highschooler before she bowed her head and thanked her. She quickly wiped her tears and gave it to her, but the highschooler shook her head as she smiled at Bao Mi.
“Keep it. I’ve got plenty more. Plus, I think you’d need it far more than I do.”
Bao Mi looked up at the girl in bewilderment as she stared at her. ‘How strange. I feel as though I know her.’
“Thank you.”
The sound of a bell ringing interrupted the two, making Bao Mi startled as she stood up on the bus.
“Thank you again, student! I won’t forget this!”
The highschooler sat in Bao Mi’s spot as she watched her figure running. Her eyes became soft as a small smile played on her lips looking at Bao Mi.
“I’m glad you found your stop, Miss.”
On the bus the people were either in a daze with injuries, some were in a panic trying to figure out where they were.
The highschooler sighed as she looked at the mirror at the bus driver. The bus driver closed the doors as he got ready to leave again. The highschooler looked back at Bao Mi’s disappearing back.
“Don’t visit me too soon, Miss. You’ve yet to live yet.”
