Stephen George adjusted the decorations one last time, his heart pounding with anticipation. Today marked his third wedding anniversary with Lucy, and he had planned a dramatic surprise to celebrate the occasion. He set up a camera to capture her reaction, eager to see her face light up.
Just then, he heard the familiar sound of the front door clicking open. “Stephen, I’m back. I’m sorry dear, I’m late today. I’ll be ready in five minutes, and then we can have dinner out,” Lucy called from the hallway, her voice tired but affectionate.
Stephen quickly positioned the camera and closed the bedroom door behind him. “Yes, darling, have you decided what you want to eat?”
“No, I will eat whatever you like,” Lucy replied as she entered the bedroom.
As the door swung open, Stephen jumped out from behind it, a burst of confetti showering the room. “Surprise!” he exclaimed.
Lucy gasped, her eyes wide with delight. “Oh, Stephen! This is wonderful!”
A year later, on their fourth anniversary, Lucy found herself reflecting on the surprise Stephen had given her the previous year. Determined to outdo him, she whispered into her phone, “Today is our fourth anniversary. Last time he gave me a great surprise. Now it’s my turn.”
Her friend on the other end of the line was curious, but Lucy kept her plans secret. “What? No, I’m not going to tell you,” she said with a mischievous smile.
The front door clicked open, and Lucy quickly ended the call. “Okay, we’ll talk later. Bye.”
Stephen walked in, a playful grin on his face. “Hey girl, you’ve planned a surprise for me, right?”
Lucy shook her head, trying to keep a straight face. “No, honey, I’m sorry for that. I’m busy today.”
Stephen's eyes sparkled with suspicion as he checked all the rooms. “I’m not going to fall for it. Where is my surprise?!”
After a thorough search, he returned, looking genuinely disappointed. “What! Are you for real? Boring,” he muttered.
Lucy tried to suppress her laughter. “I’m sorry. Oh yea, I forgot to mention, you got a courier. I think it’s some patient’s record from your department.”
Stephen nodded, taking the envelope she handed him. Both were doctors in different departments at the same hospital. He opened the courier and skimmed the contents.
“Lucy, these are pregnancy reports. I think this is for you.”
Lucy continued setting the dinner table. “Oh, will you say out the patient’s name for me so that I can have an idea about it?”
Stephen scanned the document again. “Mmmmm… The name of the patient is Lucy. Wait, what! This patient’s name is the same as yours.”
Lucy looked up, a smile playing on her lips. “What? I didn’t hear you.”
Stephen read aloud, “It’s Lucy George and her husband’s name is Stephen George, and the subject is she is ‘3 months pregnant’.” His eyes widened as realization dawned. “Hey! These are our names. Are you pregnant? Oh my God! For real?!”
Lucy beamed at him. “Yes, this is the surprise I planned for you.”
On a bright morning, Lucy and Stephen sang joyously, “Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, our sweet apple. Happy birthday!”
Their son, Leo, clapped his hands in delight. “Mommy, where are we going now?”
Lucy smiled at him. “Today, we are going to the temple, and then we can go to your favorite place.”
“Amusement Park?!” Leo asked, eyes wide with excitement.
“Yes!” Lucy confirmed, laughing.
As they prepared for the day, Lucy found herself lost in thought.
Birthday, why do we actually celebrate birthdays? It’s just that there should be at least one day in a year that brings lots of blessings and love from our well-wishers. Will those blessings actually help us?
People usually feel happy on their birthday. Of course, there are people who have to work overtime and can’t take a break even on their birthday. That’s how their life is designed. Who designs one’s life—ourselves or God?
Some people really enjoy their birthdays with surprises and plans, forgetting everything and experiencing ecstasy. But there is still some silence within that happiness that can only be identified by oneself. This silence is a guide, helping us see reality and protecting us from making decisions out of pure joy.
Tragedy struck suddenly. The news report was blunt and horrifying: “Dr. George was sleepy while driving the car and hit a truck. His son is in ICU, his wife’s hand is fractured, and he has minor injuries.”
Stephen stood beside Lucy in the hospital corridor, his heart heavy with guilt and fear. “Lucy, don’t worry. He will be all right. Let’s pray to God.”
Lucy turned on him, her eyes blazing with pain and anger. “What are you even talking about?! We are doctors! We know he is in very serious condition, and he’s not even old enough to undergo surgery. We already lost our child.” She broke down, tears streaming down her face as she grabbed Stephen’s collar and slapped him in her anguish. “What will you ask God now?!”
Stephen held her, his own tears falling.
Sometimes we see doctors as gods, but when they are in need, will God help them? Whatever the result, whoever they are, people in hospitals often pray in silence, holding onto the finite hope that their prayers may bring back their loved ones. Can a man live without praying to God? If yes, how? When he doesn’t need anything? Or when he has no one to care for? Who knows what we are doing, living like this? Who knows what we will be when we die? Some questions are prohibited to ask. Even if they are not, whom will we ask? The sun? The moon? Or this wide, never-ending silent sky.
The phone buzzed incessantly until Lucy answered, her voice trembling. “Hello, Nanny. I want you here, Nanny. My son… my son. Help me to save my son, Nanny. Please do something.”
Stephen took the phone from her gently. “Hello, Nanny. Will you please come to the hospital? Lucy is not feeling good. She needs you.”
After a brief pause, he nodded. “Okay, thank you, Nanny. See you.”
Lucy looked up at him, her eyes red and swollen. “Is she coming? My mom said she can save my kid. Stephen, she will come, right?”
“Yes, yes. She said she is coming. She may arrive in a few hours. Lucy, you didn’t eat anything, and you didn’t sleep for a day. At this rate, you will get sick. Please get up and eat this and take a nap.”
“Okay,” Lucy whispered, her voice hollow. “You’ll wake me when Nanny comes, right?”
“Yes, I will. Now get up,” Stephen urged, helping her to her feet.
As Lucy settled down to rest, Stephen watched her with a heavy heart. Why is she asking for Nanny? What is she going to do? Nanny is Lucy’s grandmother. The last time I saw her was at our wedding. Lucy used to say she can talk with God. Is it true? Maybe, that’s why Lucy keeps asking about her. For now, all I can do is trust her.
