Chapter Four

"Fine. Calm down Sis."

"The father is..." He stops.

"What? Who is it?" Mom actually sounds concerned.

"You know what? Who cares who the father is, anyway?" He's doing that nervous laugh that he always does when he doesn't want to tell us something. Why won't he tell us?

"Everyone cares, Gray. Now tell us." I need to know who's going to die.

He mumbles something under his breath.

"What was that, dear?" Mom hates it when he mumbles.

"I said 'neither of them are the father'."

Jonathan and Ricky look relieved that they don't have to deal with all this anymore. Lucky.

"What do you mean neither of them are the father? Who is it?" At least I don't have to kill Ricky.

He mumbled something else. I never notice how much he does that. I don't like it.

"One more time, Bro."

"Carter"

"What about Carter?" What does my best friend have to do with any of this?

"He's the father. It's Carter."

My mother passes out.

What did he just say?

He couldn't have said what I think he said.

Carter!

This is his fault! He did this!

"What?" I'm yelling now but I have a right. Carter is my best friend. Was my best friend. Or was he? If he was ever really my friend he wouldn't have done this. I was going to kill the father anyway but this is personal. He betrayed me. He is so dead. I was going to be discreet about it but it's too late for that now. I grab the pair of scissors that sits on the coffee table and jump on him.

People are yelling at me and I'm yelling back but I'm too far gone to understand what they're saying. All I can think of is the way it feels when the scissors finally go through his back. Straight into his heart.

Then I'm pulled away from my former best friend's body.

Jonathan and Grayson are dragging me away from him.

Melanie is crying.

Ricky looks a little proud of me.

At least someone understands.

He had to die.

There was no other way for my sister to be happy.

No other way for her to be free.
