"You ready for this 'Lista?" Carter asks me as we stand on the porch of my sister's house. He takes my hand in his and gives it a comforting squeeze.
"Not really." I whisper "But I have to know, Carter."
"Alright then. Let's go" Carter always makes things seem easier than they really are. That's what I love about him.
He walks me through the door.
As Carter and I enter the room I see who else is here. On one side of the room Melanie is talking to our mother. From my position I can't hear what is being said but I'm sure mother is trying to convince Mel to forget about the test we had done and just go with Jonathan. In the other corner are two men I am quite familiar with. Jonathan and Ricky.
Jonathan is a rich man that lives a few blocks away in a big house with a pool in the backyard. He always dresses in fancy suits and has his hair gelled back in the way that every stereotypical rich guy does. Most women think he's the perfect guy, with his baby blue eyes and platinum blonde hair, but I know better. He's just a spoiled little boy who thinks he can have whatever he wants, whenever he wants it, and if he thinks he can just take my sister away he'll regret ever coming into this house in the first place.
Ricky, unlike Jonathan, doesn't live in a big house or have a pool or wear fancy clothes. In fact, I'm pretty sure he lives in a cardboard box under the bridge just outside of town. He showed up a few years ago with no money or anywhere to go and since then not much about him has changed. He still wears that same ratty old leather jacket and bent aviators he's had since he made his first appearance in town. His hair is still the same faded blue mess it was the first time I saw him and his eyes were the same emerald green. He was wearing the same ripped up jeans and dirty boots that he never seems to clean. He better not be the one who caused this. He's mine. I'd hate to have to kill him.
Now everyone is looking at me
Everyone except for my mother.
I don't know what to do. How do you talk to people when you're going to kill one of them? You don't.
I walk over to Mel and our mom. Now I can hear mom's insistent pleading for my sister to lie about the results.
"Please! Melanie! Think of how much that man could benefit the family." Once our mother decides she wants something it's nearly impossible to change her mind.
But this isn't her decision.
"Mom! Stop it. This isn't about money or looks. This is about the father of my child. This baby deserves to know the man who created it and you will not stop me from having whoever that is in our lives, Mother."
My sister has always been such a good person, wanting the right person in her life. That's why I have to kill him. She wants the right person and neither of them are the right person. Not for her. She'll just accept whichever deadbeat that test tells her to. So I have to kill him. So my sister can be happy.
"I'll never understand you Melanie." You can feel the disappointment that radiates from her. "Let's just get this over with."
