Unfolding the Truth

The room was dim, lit only by the flickering city lights that spilled in through the tall windows. Jimin had gone, left in silence, like a storm retreating after wreckage. But his words hung in the air like the scent of smoke.

He loved you.
And Taehyung had known. That was the worst part.
He moved toward Jungkook’s room.
He hadn’t stepped inside since the night he pulled the trigger.
The door creaked open like it remembered everything. The scent of musk and faint cologne lingered. The bed was untouched. On the nightstand, Jungkook’s silver ring still rested in the glass tray abandoned, or maybe left behind on purpose.
Taehyung moved slowly, almost afraid. Drawers. Shelves. Empty bottles. Photographs turned face down.
Then he saw it.
A black envelope. Tucked between the pages of a worn leather-bound book Taehyung had given him on their first anniversary... The Art of War.
The moment his fingers touched the paper, a chill ran up his spine. Jungkook’s handwriting. Sharp, elegant, slightly chaotic—like him.
He sat on the bed. Tore it open.
And read.
If you’re reading this, it means you’ve killed me.
Taehyung’s hands froze.
“I always knew you would. Not because you’re heartless. But because you love too deeply, and in your world, love is a threat. A weakness. And you were raised to destroy your weaknesses.”
“But I wasn’t your enemy, Tae. I was trying to protect you. From them.”
There was a long pause in the letter. Ink smudged, as if Jungkook’s hand had trembled.
“The Council wanted you dead. You were too powerful. Too independent. They used me. Told me they’d spare you if I gave them information. I refused. They threatened to kill you anyway. So I agreed—to play their game, to feed them lies, to buy you time.” “But I guess I ran out of it.”
Taehyung’s vision blurred.
“If you chose the crown over me, I don’t hate you. You never asked for love. You only knew how to command loyalty. I gave you both.” “But if there’s any part of you that still loves me… don’t let them win.” “Burn the empire if you have to.” “Just don’t lose yourself in the ashes.” —Jungkook
The letter slipped from Taehyung’s hands.
His breath hitched.
The room, the silence, the blood—it all made sense now. Jungkook hadn’t betrayed him. He had sacrificed himself to protect him from a bigger enemy.
The Council. His father’s allies. The old blood. The ones who whispered in the dark, hiding behind legacy and tradition.
He had been played. And worse, he had pulled the trigger on the only person who truly loved him.
Taehyung stood. Heart pounding. Rage simmering under grief.

Burn the empire if you have to…
His jaw clenched. Eyes sharp now. Alive with vengeance.
