Bus driver
Scarlet
Hope you guys know about the viewer Discretion.
Ella
Now let us talk about the bus driver of that boarding school.
Ella
Kim always thought that he had a creepy job.
Ella
His job was to wake up at the crack of dawn Drive around in the foggy morning.
Pick up students.
And he would then drop them off at school
Ella
But being a bus driver isn’t creepy.
Ella
The kids are not creepy
Ella
But there was just something about that boarding school
Ella
It is a Boarding school were most of the kids live their full time
Ella
But there were still a few that commuted
Ella
So he would pick up the commuters
Ella
The school was nestled at the bottom of a mountain, and it just looked like there was a perpetual cloud of fog looming over the place.
Ella
He would see the others students that lived at the school.
Ella
They would look as if they were empty shells or ghosts
Ella
It's like he was pulling up to a zombie school
Ella
They were not having fun
Ella
They were never running around full of morning energy
Ella
There were probably moments he even joked with his family. That maybe the school is haunted and all those are ghosts in the school. And he was the only one that could see the ghost.
Ella
And that was the way how the kids acted
Ella
The only reason he kept the job was the kids really liked him
Ella
He was like a grandpa to them
Ella
They were so comfortable around him
Ella
And also he wanted to see their journey through the school years
Ella
Sometimes he would open the door and a kid would step in, smile and wave
Ella
As the sleeve of their shirt lifted, He would see a bruise or multiple bruises
Ella
The first time he saw it on a kid, he would lock eyes with him and smile!
Ella
He wouldn't say anything because, he thought, maybe kids are tough players, maybe they got too excited at the playground.
Ella
But the second time he saw it, he would try and approach it as gently as possible.
Bus driver
What happened to your wrist?
Ella
He thought maybe it's a parent, but they would smile shapelessly
Ella
Suddenly a friend would butt in, “Oh! He forgot his homework, so the teacher punished him”.
Ella
He wasn’t buying that explanation.
Bus driver
Okay, so teachers physically disciplining students in South Korea hadn't been outlawed at this point, but to leave actual bruises! That's going a bit too far – he thought.
Ella
Usually, he tried his best to be happy for the kids because it didn't seem like the teachers were happy.
Ella
It didn't seem like the boarding school kids were happy.
Ella
So, physical punishment also, it's like usually they ask you to put your hands up, and they will spank you with a ruler!
Scarlet
Yeah
It's not like punching you, leaving bruises - not that kind of physical punishment
Ella
Yeah
It was supposed to be disciplinary action!
Scarlet
So, this is why he's very confused!
Ella
The bus driver is like that's not normal to have any bruises left on a student just because he forgot his homework! That's abuse! That's not even disciplinary action, right?
Ella
So, he makes sure that he's the happiest chapter of the kids’ lives!
Ella
Some days, the shy ones would get on the bus, and he would try to bring them out of their shells.
Ella
He would ask them questions...
Bus driver
Well, how was your day?
What'd you guys do?
Ella
He remembered how he was having a conversation with one of the female students in the front row.
Ella
She was telling him about her day at school.
Ella
Her tone was very relaxed and casual.
Shy girl
For lunch, I had more Korean food
Shy girl
Then the teacher touched me down there, because I forgot my homework
Shy girl
Then, oh! I think I had geography class right after
Ella
His hands gripped the steering wheel as he glanced in the rear-view mirror, and the little girl is just smiling at him, telling him what happened, because she's a kid
Scarlet
How old are these students?
Ella
This is from elementary to high school, because it's a school for the differently abled.
Ella
There was not really a high school
Scarlet
So, I think she was like 10
Ella
Yeah
Of course, she has no idea that this is wrong.
Ella
Nobody taught her that!
Scarlet
And that's not her fault, right?
Ella
And she's just smiling, telling this story, because she's that young!
Ella
He didn't want to push her too much.
Ella
He was worried that he would cause her to close up or think that she was in trouble.
Ella
So, he tried to keep his tone light.
Bus driver
“Oh! a teacher touched you where?”
Shy girl
“In my pants, near my private parts”
Ella
The little girl got distracted with her friends.
Ella
That night, the bus driver went home and he was pacing his living room.
Ella
Sometimes, you want to scream like, “okay, well, bus driver! do something!” right?
Ella
But I had to keep reminding myself that this is a completely different time from today.
Ella
There was no social media.
Ella
There was really no police that cared, unless there was social media pressuring them to care.
Ella
The media didn't care unless they were guaranteed clicks!
Ella
Who was this bus driver to go up against an entire School accusing one of the teachers that he didn't even know.
Ella
He had kids and a wife and he had so much pressure this is really the only job he had
Ella
I know people are gonna be like then get a new job right why would you even want to work under these people
Ella
South Korea is very different from many other countries
Ella
So in the U.S you could get fired from a job and if your next boss calls your old boss and they start badmouthing you you could technically sue your old boss
Ella
The the employee protection laws are a lot stronger in US
Ella
In South Korea if you get fired from a job you're effectively blacklisted
Ella
It doesn't even matter if you were fired because you were too good at your job
