As my mom first laid eyes on Gullivar, she stared at him intently and asked him who he was. Gullivar, with a searching look on his face, hesitated for a moment before telling us that he lived in the forest and had no family. He had become injured and was hungry when I found him in the woods.
My mom wasted no time in cooking up a warm meal for him and calling us all to the table. As Gullivar sat down and dug into his meal, I could see the relief wash over him. He had been wandering in the forest for an unknown amount of time, and he was clearly grateful for the food and shelter we were providing him.
After finishing his meal, Gullivar looked up at us with gratitude in his eyes and softly thanked us for our kindness. My mom simply smiled and told him not to worry about it, that we were happy to help.
I could sense that Gullivar was still a bit nervous, so I decided to try and make him feel more at ease. "So, Gullivar," I asked, "what were you doing in the forest? Were you on some kind of adventure?"
Gullivar looked down at his hands and hesitated for a moment before answering. "Not exactly," he said. "I was running away from some bad people."
My mom and I exchanged a worried glance. "What kind of bad people?" I asked.
Gullivar shrugged. "I don't really know," he said. "All I know is that they were after me, and I had to get away."
I could tell that Gullivar didn't want to talk about it anymore, so I changed the subject. "Well, you don't have to worry about them now," I said. "You're safe here with us."
My mom nodded in agreement and told him that he was now a part of our family. She led him to the spare room, showing him where he could put his things and make himself comfortable.
As my mom left the room, she turned to me and said, "You should go get your books and start studying with him. He needs to be prepared for his school entry test."
I groaned inwardly at the thought of more studying, but I knew my mom was right. I went to my room and grabbed my books, then returned to the table where Gullivar was waiting.
We spent the rest of the evening studying together, with my mom occasionally coming in to check on us and offer encouragement. Gullivar was a quick learner, and I could tell that he was going to do well on his test.
As it grew late and we finished our studying for the night, my mom came in with a plate of cookies and a smile on her face. "Good work, you two," she said. "You're both going to do great on your tests."
Gullivar looked up at her with a grateful smile. "Thank you, " he said. "I really appreciate all that you and your family have done for me."
My mom patted him on the back. "Don't mention it, dear," she said. "We're just happy to have you here with us."
And with that, we all settled in for the night. Gullivar had his own room, and my mom and I retired to ours. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the unexpected addition to our family. Gullivar might have been a stranger when he arrived, but now he was one of us, and we were all in it together.
