The reason their parents decided to get their daughter married was because Valerie was older and more mature than Theo. She knew how to stand up for herself and didn't take shit from nobody. Theo had always been the kinder one, he rarely ever blew up (Jackson was an exception) and usually kept silent on many affairs. So they were still skeptical of sending him away to a man rumoured to be cold and distant.
