Elizabeth didn’t know anything about her biological parent. She was left in front of the hospital on a hot summer day. The nurses coming in for the afternoon found her and brought her into the building. When she was only 25 days old she was fostered by the Ono couple.
They couldn’t have children but the one thing she could never figure is why they took her. A boy would have been better. As she grew she became the pest in the Ono house hold. At home she didn’t have a name. Instead she was called Gaichu (pest). When she went to kindergarten she realized that she had another name Elizabeth; the name the nurses at the hospital had given her. She never carried their last name. At school she was only her first name. She bullied for not having parents, she was bullied because her skin was dark and not pale like the other children.
The teacher never helped her when she was bullied by the other children. When she would complain about the bullying the teacher would punish her. She didn’t know why she was so unloved, she felt like she never even got a chance.
She would try to do everything right but she was still the hated and looked down on. She would get high marks at school so her foster parents would love her but instead she was beaten and humiliated.
Elizabeth cried and held her baby close she didn’t want that for him. She wanted her son to have a good beginning and to have a lot of love. She wanted to be the mother she always wished she had.
“Yoshio would be a lovely name,” one of the women finally spoke up. Bring Elizabeth back to the present conversation. She pushed those horrible memories to the back of her mind. She couldn’t think of those things anymore, she needed to think of her baby.
“Yoshio?” Elizabeth looked at the woman.
“It means righteous man,” the woman answered. Elizabeth smiled she liked that. Her son would have a righteous name to go along with his righteous life.
“I like it, Yoshio Moore,” she kissed him again and the nurse came back into the room.
“Let me take him, so you can have a rest,” he reached out for little Yoshio but Elizabeth was reluctant. Elizabeth shook her head no and pulled him closer to herself.
“It’s okay I’m taking him to have a rest and you need a rest too. I won’t let nothing happen to him. I promise.” The nurse smiled warmly.
“Okay,” Elizabeth slowly handed Yoshio to the nurse.
“I’ll bring him to you tomorrow when it’s time to be discharged,” the nurse assured Elizabeth.
Elizabeth nodded her head and rested her head on her pillow. She closed her eyes once Yoshio and the nurse where out of the room.
“Don’t worry he’ll be alright. Their taking him to the nursery with the other babies.” One of the woman reassured her as she drifted off to sleep.
The following morning Elizabeth woke up to a lot of commotion in the hallway. The other women in the ward were sitting up and looking at the door.
“What’s going on?” Elizabeth rubbed her eyes as she ask her questions.
“We don’t know. They’ve been running up and down for about an hour now.” One of the woman offered. Elizabeth climes our of bed. The floor cold to the touch, she looked around for her slippers but couldn’t find them.
“Where are you going?” Another one of the woman asked as Elizabeth made her way to the door.
“I have to know what’s going on my baby is out there,” she put her hand on the door knob and her heart started beating fast; she could hear it pounding away in her chest. It was deafening the way it was so loud. She finally pushed open the door and was greeted with doctors, nurse, and security personnel running in every direction. The ground was covered with papers.
She made her way to the nurses station.
“Excuse me what’s going on,” she asked a nurse who was half listening and half talking on the phone.
“One of the babies is missing ,” the nurse blurted out and went to the phone.
“What!?” Elizabeth screamed and questioned at the same time.
“Where are the babies?” Elizabeth asked.
“End of this hallway,” the nurse didn’t even look at Elizabeth. She ran down the hallway. Tripping on papers as she ran around. She reached the large glass windows of the nursery and looked inside.
