"So you're a witch..." Demetrius inquires, and Michele shakes her head in denial.
"No, sir, I'm a fairy. My grandmother is a witch, my father became a wizard and married my mother who is a fairy, and then there's me, a mix of both worlds..."
"Thanks to the opening of the borders between communities, all beings have intermingled and we've formed a robust territory," Mattias speaks as he enters the room where she is.
"Beta..." Everyone says and lowers their heads in a sign of respect.
"Yes, thanks to the merging of our communities. Now, I would ask you to let her rest; she's still recovering," I say, and everyone looks at me.
"My cell phone, Michele, I've lost it and have no idea where it is, please tell my mother I'll be sleeping at your place; I don't want her here crying as she always does..."
Her words spill out and her sweet voice bewitches me.
"I'll go... Tomorrow you'll head home and call me."
"I will call, yes..."
I see the friendship and affection her friends have for her and I'm glad.
Once they leave the room, it's just the three of us. My Beta still had a few things to discuss with me.
"How is she doing?" Virginia's voice is heard as soon as she enters the room; I glance at Ava whose eyes widen.
"Fine, my dear," Mattias says, and Virginia approaches the bed.
"Hi, I'm Virginia..." Before she can finish, Ava interrupts, making everyone laugh.
"I know, wow, you're gorgeous, much more so in person. Dustin, my friend, is smitten with you, sorry Mr. Mattias, but your mate is stunning, and incredible at hunting, and quick too." Ava showers Virginia with compliments, who blushes at the praise.
"And you are an adorable person," Virginia responds, with Ava blushing at that.
"I'm sorry, I tend to talk too much when I'm nervous."
"Are you nervous, Ava?" I ask as I get up from the couch and walk towards her, with Argus, my wolf, acting needy around her.
"You all are amazing; Alpha Demetrius Conway is an original Lycan without blemish, from a pure royal lineage, and you, Beta Mattias, are a white wolf, also of an original lineage from the Lupius family, and you, Virginia, a tigress from the very ancient Tagous family. How could I not be nervous around you?"
Her adorable ways leave me more enchanted, the sparkle in her eyes, her smile, and that dimple on the left side of her cheek... But if Argus is crazy about her and she could be my mate, why isn't she affected by me? I remember when Virginia and Mattias met; it was instantaneous.
Looking at her, I'm puzzled; is it because her wolf hasn't surfaced yet? I can sense her power, dormant, yes, but it's there.
"Thank you for your kind words, but you're incredible too; after all, you're here and alive," Virginia says, and Ava remarks,
"That's nothing, it was you who arrived in time. I don't have a wolf, no magic; I'm a soulless one, as they say." She looks sad, and Argus feels anger, as do I.
"Who told you that you don't have a soul?" I speak angrily, vowing to myself I would remove the head of whoever said that.
"Demetrius..." Mattias begins, but Argus is furious, and so am I...
"ALPHA..." Virginia steps in front of me; I shake my head and notice Ava silent and cowering on the bed. I had not noticed before, but Argus had taken control, my eyes red and fur beginning to show.
I look at her and storm out of the room, running through the hospital's corridors, both Argus and I enraged at them calling her soulless; she is so pure. I'm never wrong about these things; I know when someone is lying; I feel it. Why would they hurt her? I need to have a word with the village elders about this mistreatment.
No, she's a good person...
"ALPHA..." I hear my Beta in my head, unware till now that I was in the forest, running, disconnected from my body as Argus assumed control. I calm down and regain dominance.
Stopping by a nearby lake, I drink some water...
"Alpha, may I approach?" He asks again.
"Yes," I say as I revert to my human form, watching him do the same. Sitting on a lakeside rock,
"What was that, Demetrius?"
He looks at me, concerned. I sigh, not sure what to say; I am usually composed and self-controlled.
"Ava..." I speak, and he sits beside me.
"What about her?"
"Argus, he's in my head driving me mad, saying she's my mate, but I haven't felt the same connection as you and Virginia did," I explain, in confusion.
"Perhaps the shock and turmoil she's been through masked something within her," he posits, and I ponder.
"She has a wolf; Argus and I can sense it, it's just not surfaced yet, perhaps that's why."
"Yes, now let's return. Let time take its course; she was frightened," he advises, and Argus nestles inside me, and I chide him.
"I didn't want this, but she said people belittle her, and I lost it."
"I understand; I can't stand people speaking ill of Virginia either, but let's go; she was worried."
We head back towards the hospital, me not understanding what came over me.
We enter and Nathan, a coyote who works with us, hands me spare clothes.
I enter her room where Virginia is chatting cheerily with her. I draw near; they both fall silent. I approach and see apprehension in her eyes. Leaving, I sit on the sofa quietly.
"Virginia, dear, may we talk outside please?" Mattias says, and she exits the room, casting me a questioning glance.
I rise, and at nearly two meters tall, I command her attention.
"I want to apologize; my wolf grew agitated, and it's not something that usually happens."
She looks at me and smiles.
"It's alright; I wasn't afraid for myself. I was concerned about you. I don't feel fear when I'm near you. I can't explain it, but I feel safe."
She speaks, and I draw closer, her scent stirring Argus within.
