*PROLOGUE*
A heavy fog blocked the view of the forest.
Solaris hates the cold and that was all it seemed to be there, damp and cold.
With her headlight on and squinting her eyes, she had her hands tense on the steering wheel and she was keeping herself leaned forward, trying to see where she was going, as the blonde girl drives too slowly down the pale desert road.
She was making sure she hadn't left the road.
It was not yet noon, but here it seemed a chilling indeterminate time that could not be distinguished between day and night.
She had never been on the Plane of the Quartz Path’s Moon, the plane of the werewolves, so she couldn't be sure if it was always like this, but this was more mysterious than she could have imagined.
She had been driving this road out of Blue Moon Pack territory and through the deepest of forests for almost 3 hours now.
And that's when a silhouette appears in front of her on the road.
Solaris jumps up and slams on the brakes, causing the old Gol she drives to skid down the road.
Solaris is a young, fit girl, not uncommon for wolves, but at her human school she was a beauty, with her slim waist and plump curves, tanned skin and blond hair. Fascinating eyes, typical of the popular cheerleader she was. But at that moment, she was just a girl alone in a car on a sinister road, who hears a high-pitched scream and all she can do is run out of the car, out of breath, terrified, and look for the person she had seen in front of her in the mist.
Solaris sees someone covering their eyes and screaming, luckily the car stopped inches from hitting a girl.
"Oh, for the Moon Goddess, are you okay?" Sol runs towards the other one, already completely drenched in the misty environment, but unable to think about it.
"What? Am I alive?!" The other girl was like a ghost, small, wet, with auburn eyes and very pale skin and hair.
Huddled, she looks at Sol with only one eye open between her hands.
"I think so..." Sol mutters trembling. "I hope so… I mean… what are you doing here?" She looks around and sees just a little bit of the road around them, before the fog covers all the rest of the view.
But she is relieved that she's certainly still on the road, at least.
Solaris is the opposite of the ghosty girl, with more color and taller. In fact, she was more precisely 5 centimeters taller, at hers 1.73m. Sol is like the sun itself in the midst of whiteness, with its curvaceous tanned body, golden hair and blue eyes, full of life.
She has never seen a werewolf other than her father, however, living with humans all her life, she has always thought that all werewolves must be big and strong, somehow paranormally perfect, in appearance and abilities compared to humans; this kind of thing that always made her so attractive among them.
Although Sol couldn't see much of this little girl in the fog, some strange instinct of hers had told her since her eyes had fallen on the girl's silhouette that she was dealing with one of them.
The ghosty girl was like Solaris.
A Wolf.
"What are you doing here…?" The little girl starts to ask, but then she looks around worriedly, and indeed, the sounds of nature seem frightening. "Can you give me a ride? We really should get out of this place now, it's not safe to stay here too long I guess..."
"What do you mean? A ride to where? Who are you?"
“Sorry, I'm Elleia, I explain everything, all your questions, I promise. But we need to leave now!” A strange crawling sound like something cracking in the muddy grass sounds out, approaching them and the two girls scream.
"What was that? Who's there?"
"Run, run, run!" The smaller girl squirms, running down the road.
"What?!”
Solaris is lost, but instead of running after the girl, she sees her car door open and runs inside.
The blonde drives, straightening her car on the road until it is parallel to the little ghosty girl. Sol opens the windows, her car already completely wet. She screams:
“Come in!” She opens the passenger door and little Wolf jumps in.
Solaris drives with difficulty, but faster than she wanted to in conditions like this.
"What's happening here?” Sol asks without taking her eyes off the road. Or at least, what little she could see.
"Uh...thank you so much..."
“Fine, I guess…but what was that? Was anyone there?”
“I-I don't know..." Elleia lies in a clearly shaky voice. "Where are you going?"
"You do not know…? How you do not know? Why were you here alone? I don't understand what's going on!"
“Okay, I'll explain. I think it was... an animal. Some wild animal, I suppose. As I said, my name is Elleia. Uh… I live close by, on campus…”
“On campus? Are you a student at the International Werewolves School?”
"Yes! Yes, I am…" she starts to say proudly, but some sadness invades her for a second before she hides it. "You too?"
“Actually…I'm trying to get there. It's my first day, I'm a new student.”
"Really? That's cool! What year? I'm in my last year before I can go to college..."
“Would that be the intermediate program? Because that's what they told me in the acceptance letter, and that if I do well in this program, I could get into the Wolves College next year!”
"Wow, what a coincidence. I'm hoping to get in next year too. How old are you? I'm 18, I think we're the same age then?"
"Well, I'm turning 18 in 3 months..."
"Oh, so it could be really… years at IWS are defined by the age of Wolves so we'll probably be classmates!"
“Cool… Unusual way to meet a new friend, I think… But I'm not even complaining, I was really scared of being alone on this road… and at the school.”
"You're also a gamma, right?"
"How do you know?"
“Oh, I can feel it. We are both gammas. It's like we're destined to meet, by the moon perhaps!" Elleia laughs at herself, but continues with her excitement. “We can be best friends!”
Sol turns the heater to a higher level and it starts making a very loud noise, defogging the windows.
“Well, I wouldn't mind. I was just as scared of getting there and not knowing anyone, as I was of the fact that I've been driving on this road for hours and I thought I'd lost the lane somehow, and I was doomed to wander in this haze alone for the rest of eternity or something. So…"
Elleia laughs her exotic little giggle once more.
“You're not lost, you're totally on track. I can show you the way, but if you continue down this road, we'll be on campus in a few more minutes.”
"That's great to hear. Sorry, I haven't introduced myself yet, I'm Solaris."
“Solaris, the new girl. This is so cool! I will show you everything!”
“Thank you, Elle. Can I call you like that? Since we're going to be friends…” Sol smiles with her white teeth showing and turns to the side.
“This is definitely what my friends call me!”
“Is it?” The blonde feels some instanteneous kinship with the pale girl and she is very happy that it was so easy to get a friend on her first day.
Greatest fear of her, since she abandoned her human life.
“Yes, in my head it is. Because I don't have many, just the ones that are in my head.” Elleia plays and laughs to herself again, but this time snoring, which makes her cover her mouth and look awkwardly at Sol.
"Uh... right." The bright blonde gives a more shyly smile this time at the ghostly girl, who looks familiar and strange at the same time, but Sol can't help but feel suspicious. "So you didn't tell me what you were doing alone in the fog?"
"About that…I was just going for a run, you know…"
"Run?"
"Yes... with my Wolf..."
"Really? Can you… Uh, transform into your Wolf?
"Of course! Since I was 16, actually. Can't you?" Elleia asks surprised.
“Uh… no. I thought it was an after 18 thing or so.”
"No, of course not. Just after 18 is an omega thing, most werewolves can shift much earlier, it doesn't really have an age...but you can't...? Have you tried talking to your Wolf?" ”
“My Wolf? Talk to it? How?”
“Ah… you're a weird werewolf, Sol” she snorts again, amused at how Solaris seems to know nothing.
"Sorry, I've been without a pack all my life..."
“Were you a Rogue?”
"No! No way, my dad and I were fine alone. Ever since my mom died during an attack on my parents' pack, my dad never wanted to join another pack. So basically, we've lived with humans until now..."
“Wow. Are you serious? It's not good for Wolves to live without packs..." Elleia says looking suspiciously at Sol.
"I realize that now. We managed to get into a Pack so I'm here. And I'm really excited about it, I feel so full of life for the first time in my life, since we joined it, like my life has just begun and it all makes sense now… it's so weird, it's like my energy or the energy around me feels more alive than ever, can you understand?”
"Yes! Being in a Pack is amazing, you take a lot of your pack's energy and strength, even from a distance, especially in Packs with powerful Alphas, like The Agreement Packs are. I mean, and it's always a bad deal for Wolves live without packs... The stories tell us that Wolves without packs become lunatics, they band together to become bandits, ROGUES, and kill each other in the end. They also become irrational and violent. In addition, they can succumb to sadness or weakness..."
“Oh-ho ho…” Sol interrupts her. "Well... it's not that much!" She says disconcerted. “I think… But I understand what you mean…” Yes, she's been feeling this story of succumbing at least… as if her vital energy has been depleting these last few years, living among humans.
“Sorry, it's just the stories they tell us. I've never met anyone without a pack, I can't imagine myself without one. I need it, you know, it feels like death if I try to leave them… I never would, anyway.”
“I was basically born without a pack so I never knew what that was about, but my dad, in his case, he had no choice, his pack was small and was decimated in a war with another pack nearby… a horrible story…”
"Sounds really awful, I'm sorry about that… and about your mother."
"Thanks… it's hard, but I think I've gotten used to it…" Sol forces a smile.
An awkward silence prevails for an awkward moment between the girls.
Only the fan continued to buzz.
“Well, I might not like the Alphas and Betas in my pack very much at times, but I think I'm very grateful that they are very strong and powerful to defend us… and especially for having participated in The Agreement. The Agreement is the best thing that ever happened to werewolves, with it we can have strong packs and we can live without worrying about wars and turf conflicts and stuff like that.”
“The Agreement looks like a really good thing. I’ve never heard of it before, but the pack my dad put us into is part of The Agreement and it looks great.”
"And it is! Seems like you don't know much about the Wolves, right? But, on the other hand, you probably know a lot about humans so… To me they look pretty dangerous with all their weapons and stuff like that.”
Sol laughs, feeling that Elleia probably knows as much about humans as she does about werewolves.
"Yes, guns are scary, but most humans don't have guns, they're just normal and good citizens, or they try to be…”
"Nice." Elleia says clearly without interest, as if she doesn't really want to know about humans.
The view begins to brighten up, as they appear to pass along an ascending road, a large metal archway signals the start of the campus.
“Here, after this archway, it’s campus territory.” Elleia informs with a smile. There is still a lot of forest around, but now it can be seen with less fog.
Also, some distant buildings stand out over tall trees or in the middle of large hills.
“You can continue along the main road, it goes to the central square, where the secretariat building is. Since you're a new student, you should go there first and you can drop me off there too. I can take advantage of this fact since I also still need to get my ID card for this year, and the central square is kind of close to the dorms, so I think I'll get some new and less wet clothes before going to class…”
“Okay, I wish I could go to the dorms before going to any classes too…”
“Great, I can go all the way with you then! And after the secretary, I show you where the dorms are.”
"This is perfect! Thank you, Elle!"
"Oh, this is going to be so much fun from now on, I'm actually going to have a best friend!" Elle puts her hands together excitedly. “We can do all the gamma classes and projects together!”
Sol smiles at her new wet friend's enthusiasm.
“Whatever you were doing in the woods alone, I'm kind of grateful for that. At least I don't have to do everything by myself now…” Sol laughs at her fears.
"Yeah, but uh… I told you what I was doing there… Anyway, can I ask you not to talk about it anymore, please?"
“I may not know much about werewolves, Elle, but I know when someone is lying to me. I know you weren't doing what you said, I also know it wasn't a wild animal surrounding us, right? But it's okay, Elle, you don't have to tell me if you're not comfortable with it, for some strange reason, I trust you.
“Thank you…” Elleia says simply and lowers her head.
"I won't talk about it anymore." Solaris assures it. “So we're really going to be friends, right? And do these gamma classes and projects together?” She asks trying to cheer the other up, worried about the low expression and silence that Elleia started. “I mean, I really need to be a good student. I'm going to need this if I want to stay in the pack and have a good position in it. Since I don't have any werewolf upbringings, they told my dad that they'll put me on omega’s positions or even lesser things if I fail school; it makes me very nervous… I was always a good student, but now I'm not sure of anything anymore, I might not know anything! I'm sorry, but I think I might really need help..."
"Absolutely!" Elleia smiles, looking back at Sol. “I'll be more than happy to help you with classes and things you didn't know from previous years, and of course to be your friend! I'm sure it was the Moon Goddess that brought us together... look, you can park your car in that parking lot, it's for visiting scholars, but since it's your first day, that's about it!”
"OK!" Sol agrees after passing a train track with the turnstile open and entering a small parking lot full of cars.
"Do they have trains here?" The tanned girl asks getting out of the car and slamming the door with difficulty as it never fully closes the first time.
“Yes, the biggest The Agreement Packs are linked to this place via train tracks…” Elleia responds by skirting around her new friend's old rusty Gol. "Do you happen to have a… scholarship?"
"Yes, I'm a scholarship student. How do you know…?" but then Sol's question dies in thin air, as she looks around her and finds herself surrounded by dozens of cars, like at a luxury fair for the latest models of the year.
Right next to her is an Audi and a huge Toyota Hilux that makes her mouth drop, and her little gnawed car seems like a child's bad toy between them; but as her eyes move to the rest, these seem to be the least impressive among them.
A sporty BMW is on the other side, lots of Dusters and other big SUVs…
But actually, she can't help but approach one of them, when she sees the most impressive car she's ever seen, a Ferrari, standing two cars from hers, completely made of matte black, that she couldn't even make out what was glass and what was metallic.
“Where did this car come from?!” She almost squealed in amazement in front of the black car. "So impressive!!" Sol moves around it for a while and goes to the other cars, reading the model names. “Venom, Hypersport… A damn Lamborghini! Oh no, I'm sick of this school!” She points to a red convertible luxury car. “What kind of visiting scholars do you get here?!”
“Uh…actually, some Alphas park here as well since it's quite close to a lot of buildings…” Elleia says worried about how Sol's reaction to the Alpha’s cars would draw the attention of people she tries to recognize gathered some distance away in the central square filled with low fog.
“New girl with a scholarship, I think we really were made to find each other, you’re going to need my help to survive here Sol.” Elleia says genuinely worried about her new friend.
"What do you mean?"
“I'm also a scholarship student…” Elleia says and turns back to the plaza, just for her concerns to be substantiated. She sees that the square is half full of people, as from the mist she sees a group approaching their area, still a few meters away, but she can imagine what it is.
Just by seeing the amount of Alpha cars in there she should already know, but mostly everything is clearer when she sees the image of the silhouettes brightening up through the brume, and there are two of them, Alphas, standing on the grass of the square pointing at her and beckoning her over with a finger.
Elleia’s heart drops, she freezes with wide eyes and Sol just looks at her without understanding.
