After some time the crown prince mysteriously disappeared leaving the throne empty this made the people of the empire worried and thus Lionel Astley became the emperor even though he wasn't in line to the throne. After he became the emperor he killed all the people he hated in secret by poisoning .

According to the novel Egburt was devastated by the dead of his sister . He could not believe that the mother he loved dearly would kill someone who was like a daughter to her. When he took over the throne everything was under his control but he wasn't happy as it wasn't something he wanted. 3years after he ascended the throne he was tired and desperate for freedom, that's when he mysteriously disappeared to live a life he wante rather than being chained down
