Am I Enough? (Depression Story)
What Will Happen?
Mom
Carly, go see where she is.
Carly walks in Lila's room, seeing her crying.
Lila
Oh! How was the store?
Carly
It was ok. Why are you crying?
Lila
Just feel gross at the moment.
Carly
Oh, well we got you some snacks!
Lila
Ok, I'll be there in a sec.
Carly walks off, and goes to the kitchen with their mom
Carly
Lila is upset, mommy.
Carly
I don't know. She didn't tell me.
Mom
Wait here, I'll be right back.
She walks into Lila's room.
Lila
I have depression mom!
Lila
Grandpa Michael told me about it.
Mom
He's just lying, sweetie.
Lila
He had it before, mom! He's not lying.
Grandpa Michael
Everything ok?
Lila
No! She thinks I don't have depression!
Mom
Don't you dare talk back to me, young lady!
Grandpa Michael
Merida, she does have depression.
Mom
Don't be silly. She never had mental health issues before.
Grandpa Michael
It happens randomly. Especially in the teen years.
Grandpa Michael
It can happen at any age, Merida.
Lila
See?! At least he believes me!
Mom
For being rude all of the sudden!
Mom
I don't want to hear it! Make sure you fold your clothes.
Lila
Was she always like this?
Grandpa Michael
Yes. Ever since she was 12.
Lila
What happened when you had depression, grandpa?
Grandpa Michael
Well, it wasn't easy. I had meltdowns, was irritated easily, wasn't confident, and even suicidal sometimes.
Lila
Oh my gosh... are you ok now?
Grandpa Michael
Of course. I'm here because I had Merida, and that she had you and Carly. Furthermore, I wouldn't be here without you guys. Sounds dramatic, but it's true.
Grandpa Michael
It never went away. But it got easier to deal with when I was 30.
Grandpa Michael
It does sometimes.
Lila
So... what can I do to stop feeling this way?
Grandpa Michael
Do anything that makes you happy. Especially hang out with family. Depression is a bad mental illness, its terrifying sometimes. But I promise you, it gets better.
Lila
Is suicidal the worst part?
Grandpa Michael
Yes. Definitely.
Lila
You're really strong, grandpa. I want to be just like you.
Grandpa Michael
You're already strong, Lila. You always been.
Grandpa Michael
Who cares? I do.
Grandpa Michael
I love you too, kiddo.
