One of the darkest fairytales is The Little Mermaid, which features suicide and murder.

Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 story follows the 14-year-old mythical creature on her quest to find true love.

The mermaid shuns her life in the sea in search of a Prince - a plot-line that we know well from the original movie.

But the torture she goes through to achieve this isn't like anything you'd see in a Disney film.

She visits the Sea Witch, who we know as Ursula, where she strikes a deal.

In Hans' version, instead of falling for the mermaid, the Prince marries another woman.

So the Sea Witch cuts the heartbroken girl another ultimatum, ensuring her survival if she agrees to murder her lover. Yes, The Little Mermaid agrees to murder the prince.

But, as she approaches the new bride and groom lying in their marital bed, she can't bring herself to kill him and instead chooses to die herself.

She then dissolves entirely into foam - before being offered one small reprieve.

As her spirit floats in the sky, she eventually earns a soul by carrying out good deeds for a whole 300 years before ascending into heaven.

The Prince is another character who isn't very family friendly.

Not only does the book describe him being entertained by female slaves at his palace, his affections for the Little Mermaid are rather creepy.

At one point, he even admits he loves her "as he would love a little child", which is not surprising giving the character's young age

(Theories)

*The Film Is Set In The Caribbean, Not Denmark

It is widely accepted that The Little Mermaid is set in the waters off of Denmark due to the fact that the author of the original fairy tale, Hans Christian Andersen, was Danish. But some fans believe the Disney tale is actually set in the Caribbean due to some of the species of fish that appear in the film.

*Captain Hook Killed Ariel’s Mom

One theory states that the red-headed mermaid in Peter Pan is Ariel’s mom and is later killed by Captain Hook. We don’t buy this theory because if it were true, Peter Pan would have to be set before The Little Mermaid. But if we compare Peter Pan’s London to Prince Eric’s kingdom, it’s clear that The Little Mermaid came first.

*Hercules And Ariel Are Relatives

If we look at the mythology behind The Little Mermaid, the theory that Ariel and Hercules are relatives is actually quite reasonable. Ariel is the daughter of Triton, the son of Poseidon. Hercules is the son of Zeus, the brother of Poseidon. This makes Triton and Hercules first cousins.

*Ariel Really Dies On The Beach When Eric Finds Her

According to one Reddit user, Ariel never actually gets to know Prince Eric, because she actually dies when she washes up on the beach and everything that comes after is imagined. The theory states that Ariel dies from loss of blood after Ursula splits her fin to create legs. This one is best forgotten.

*Moana Is The Little Mermaid Story In Reverse

Some fans believe that Disney’s Moana, is actually The Little Mermaid story in reverse. While Ariel is an ocean princess who desires to visit the land, Moana is a land princess longing to venture to the sea. Both stories feature an older woman who pushes the protagonist toward her goal and either a deeply good or deeply evil sea crab.

*Prince Eric Is Only Settling For Ariel

One theory states Eric doesn’t actually love Ariel and is only settling for her when he nearly kisses her on the lagoon. He’s really in love with the voice he heard on the beach and believes he’ll never find her so is settling for second-best. Although this theory has some merit, we refuse to believe that Eric sees nothing else in Ariel.

*The Ship Ariel Explores Belonged To Anna And Elsa’s Parents

One of the most popular Disney universe theories claims that the shipwreck that Ariel visits at the beginning of the film actually once belonged to Elsa and Anna’s parents, who crashed on route to Rapunzel’s wedding in Germany. This theory assumes that The Little Mermaid is set off the coast of Denmark, which is close to Norway and the Kingdom of Arendelle.

*Ariel Is Schizophrenic And Flounder Is Imagined

The idea that many of our favorite stories, including Harry Potter, have been imagined by the main characters, is becoming increasingly popular. Some fans have posed the theory that the events of The Little Mermaid never actually take place. Instead, Ariel is schizophrenic and the characters she interacts with, including Flounder, are imagined. Thankfully, there’s not much evidence to back this up.

*Ursula Represents Feminism

While highlighting the subversive nature of The Little Mermaid, Smithsonian Magazine argued that the character of Ursula actually represents feminism along with the fluidity of gender. She tells Ariel that she can be anything she wants, but Ariel only wants to be a human to fall in love with a man.

*Ursula Is Ariel’s Doctor

Along the lines of the ‘Ariel is schizophrenic’ theory, also comes the theory that Ursula is not a sea witch at all but a doctor. Her role in Ariel’s life is, supposedly, to give her medicine to make her happy which is symbolically represented through the legs she gives her.

*King Triton Got Seven Different Mermaids Pregnant

Ever wondered why none of Ariel’s six sisters look anything like her? According to the YouTube channel The Jongasm, this is because they all have different mothers. Triton got seven different mermaids pregnant in order to stretch out his bloodline even further. This theory also states that Ariel’s mom is still alive, and Ariel is the favorite because Triton is married to her mother.

*Triton Causes The Hurricane That Wrecks Eric’s Ship

Near the beginning of the film, Eric’s royal ship runs into a storm which nearly costs him his life. Some fans believe that this was Triton’s doing because he was finally fed up with his daughter visiting the surface to watch humans. We know Triton is harsh, but he’s not evil enough to sentence all those sailors to death.

*There’s A War Between The Sea Creatures

When you analyze The Little Mermaid closely, it seems feasible that there’s a rift between the different species of the ocean. Ursula seems resentful of Triton “and his little fish folk” which could possibly allude to the fact that those with tentacles rather than tails are considered as a sub-species of marine life.

*The Little Mermaid Is Set In France

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that the kingdom where Prince Eric lives and the town that Belle lives in Beauty and the Beast are strikingly similar, leaving some to suggest that they’re actually the same place and The Little Mermaid is really set in France. But we have to disagree. All Disney towns resemble each other in one way or another.

*Flounder Is So Caring Of Ariel Because His Mother Over-Nurtured Him

According to Christine Moore House Blogspot, the reason why Flounder is such a caring friend to Ariel is because he was over-nurtured as a child. The bond that he developed with his mother eventually taught him to be fearful of his surroundings and overly cautious of his friends and their wellbeing.
