Fighting the lure of oblivion, Tayla took a moment to enjoy the merits of breathing. Sweet relief. She glanced to the left and measured the distance between herself and the pile of fluffy pillows she’d been aiming for. Clearly she needed more practice. Or maybe she needed elves to not slam into her mid jump. Either way, she hurt.
Blay knelt at her side and she just stared at him. She couldn’t believe her death was going to come at the hands of someone so goddamn beautiful. She didn’t know whether to be pleased or pissed off.
“What are you waiting for?” she muttered when he began to strip off her parka. The movements hurt. Everything hurt. Even body parts she was sure hadn’t been injured began to throb. Couldn’t he wait until she was dead to steal her stuff?
He looked at her and for once he didn’t seem to have that perpetually amused expression on his face. “I’ll get most of your clothes off and then lock you in, okay?”
She blinked and thought intelligently, huh?
“Tayla?” He shook her shoulder and she realized he’d asked her another question. “Tayla, focus. Is this house secure?”
“Secure…” Her head was full of cotton; all her thoughts felt buffeted and indistinct. “Yeah. You gonna kill me now?”
He grinned at her but his face was tight. “Not today, leela.” He tugged her shirt over her head and then slid her jeans and long johns off her legs.
She had a passing thought that it should bother her that a strange man was undressing her. But then a muscle began to spasm in her calf. Her leg jerked.
“It’s starting,” he told her. She wanted to ask what was starting but that muscle spasm in her leg spread. It felt like her entire limb was coming undone, muscles unravelling and bone contorting. The sensation seeped through her entire being like poison. It was agony. What had he done to her! She flopped like a fish out of water, flipping onto her stomach and her back flying into the air, arching at a spine breaking angle. Anguish speared through her face and she felt her jaw lock. Her head lowered. Bones snapped.
She couldn’t suck in enough air to scream, the sound coming out her mouth was instead a low, Gah, gah, gah.
She didn’t even hear Blay leave the room.
Her eyes rolled as panic engulfed her. What felt like a million little needles rolled down her spine in a wave. The sensation was wrong. Abnormal. It made her writhe but when she opened her mouth to scream what came out was not… human. The thought cleared some of the fog clouding her brain. In that moment of clarity she grasped that her earlier fear was being realized. The werewolf bite.
She was Changing.
