Chapter 1 - My Own Life
Harriet Lawson
Julia? We're going for dinner, do you perhaps want to come with us?
I was sitting at my desk, finishing up some work that I needed to finalise before the end of the week when one of my colleagues invited me out for dinner for the first time.
I haven't been in this company for that long. My first day was two months ago, and people haven't welcomed me with completely open arms just yet.
Everyone on this floor are rivals fighting for a chance to be a part of a huge advertisement project.
All they see me as is another person to look out for.
The fact that someone is taking the initiative to have dinner with me is for one of two reasons.
One, they want me to submit to them, giving up some of my ideas to enhance their performance.
Perhaps they'd like to embarrass me in the process.
Or they're actually trying to be nice and want to welcome me into their group.
However, the fact that I overheard these guys gossiping about me in the bathroom just a few hours prior makes this the first option.
I can't offend them. Hostile work environments aren't healthy.
Clapping my hands together, I sighed and closed my eyes, apologetic.
Julia Weston
I'm so sorry guys. I already have a meeting with friends planned. Another time though!
Harriet Lawson
Right... shame. See you, don't work too late!
Harriet Lawson
You should always take a break!
They just don't want me to get ahead... I smiled and waved them away.
Julia Weston
Right! I'll be right behind you, promise!
As soon as the elevator door closed, I sighed.
I really wanted a workplace to be a place where I could have fun. Exchange beauty tips with the other colleagues, go out for lunch and talk about whatever comes to our mind.
Perhaps I should have chosen a different profession than advertisement...
Suddenly, my phone buzzed and I immediately smiled upon seeing my brother's name pop up.
I smiled. It's been a while since my brother and I went out together.
Ever since I moved out of his apartment and got myself a job, we've hardly had time to meet.
Julia Weston
Come on, you'd better hurry up and change!
Today, Emmett made a reservation at the high-end restaurant that is just across the street to my company building.
How he managed to snag a reservation is beyond me.
I rushed into the bathrooms and slipped a folded dress out of my bag.
The only downside about going to a fancy restaurant is first, the prices.
So I should say that there are two downsides. The second is that they have a dress code.
I can't just waltz in wearing my work clothes, I'd be kicked out!
I don't know what possessed him, I could have honestly met him anywhere in the city.
Putting on a black dress, fixing my hair and slipping on a pair of matching heels, I walked out of that bathroom feeling like a princess.
I wonder what Emmett will say when he sees me.
It'll be my wishful thinking for him to tell me how grownup I look.
He'll probably make a joke and then cover my shoulders up with his suit jacket, like he always does.
It's cute how he's strangely protective like that.
