I know this is hard to understand but...since ML has a split personality, then the bad things he did aren't actually his fault. When a second personality takes over, the original personality- the real him- has no knowledge or control of the actions of the second personality. Plus, whenever he came back to his true self, he agonized over what his alter ego did and harshly beat himself in a brutal way to punish himself. He's very tortured over his past traumas and pain so I and he desperately wants love and affection so I think he's very tragic and pitiful.
Split personality disorder is real folks and it's no laughing matter. It's a self-protecting mechanism designed by the psyche to keep trauma from destroying the mind. My dad is a therapist and he's seen it before.
