ch 6

Suddenly he sat down his food and made his way over to a cabinet. He opened the doors, looking back over to you. “Do you want a drink?”

You eyed the cabinet he had opened. It was stocked with seemingly expensive alcohol that he had been gifted. Some of them were still left in bows and ribbons. Your boss asking you to stay late and then offering you a drink? Surely this was a hallucination.

He looked at you, still waiting for a response. “Is this a test?” You questioned, scared to answer his question honestly.

He let out a chuckle, if only for a second. Still it was the first time you had seen him show an emotion other than unpleased.

“I couldn’t get through these nights without drinking a little.” He picked up two bottles, one in each hand and turned towards you, “Whiskey or champagne?”

“I’ve never had champagne before.”

He looked surprised by your statement and brought both bottles over. “Really? How old are you?”

“I’m old enough.” You answered slyly. “It’s just, I’ve always been wary of sixteen dollar champagne and that’s all I could afford.”

“You can have it if you want, it’s not to my taste.” He sat down the bottle in front of you and your eyes almost fell out of your head as you examined the label.

He went back to the cabinet and pulled out two whiskey glasses.

“Um.” you stated, holding the champagne bottle unsure. He noticed you hesitance and strolled over. You thought you saw a glimpse of a smile on his face as he took the bottle from you. You watched as he started opening it. He worked will skilled hands for someone who didn’t drink champagne. He slowly popped the top without as much as a drop spilling.

“I thought it was supposed to pop.” You said as he filled your glass.

“Not if you open it the right way.”

Here you were sitting with the boss, drinking his fancy champagne, eating chinese takeout in his office after he had made you work overtime. Your coworkers would never believe you. You couldn’t see him fessing up to it either. At that moment you knew it would be a memory you would forever have to keep to yourself for fear of others thinking you were crazy.

You watched as he poured himself a glass of whiskey, downing it with one swig and immediately pouring another.

You took in the appearance before you. He had taken off his blazer and rolled up his sleeves to his elbows. Never did you think you would see your boss so...relaxed. Maybe he’s actually tolerable when he has a buzz. You thought it was a good thing to remember and you noted to relay the information to your colleagues.

You both sat in silence again, sipping on your drinks. Your drink was strong, the bubbles were burning your throat, but in a good way.

You had never been in the building before at night and you hadn’t imagined how beautiful the view he had from his office of the city was. Each wall, except for the entrance, was floor to ceiling glass. For a moment you forget where you were.
