The air inside the elevator became harder to breath. The small space was almost suffocating. You were the only two occupants and you rode the elevator everyday filled to the brim with people, but somehow it felt smaller.
You didn’t want to be the one to break the silence, it was like a silent competition between the two of you. The one who spoke first proved they were uncomfortable. Plus, it’s not like you had a good track record of saying things to him.
You lagged behind after the elevator doors parted. You hadn’t seen the top floor since your interview. You almost gasped at how pretty it was. It was usually the only floor visitors get to see, therefore it had to be the best.
Though the floors were the same size, the lack of cubicles made the top floor feel bigger. You trailed behind him, taking in the view as he led the way to his office. He waited for you, holding the door open. You wanted to rebel, the stubborness in you felt as though it was him asserting his dominance, but again you silently obeyed by walking through the door.
The room carried the sweet aroma of fried food. He had an array of stuff already sitting on his desk. It looked like too much for one person, what would he had done if you’d declined? Sometimes rich people were dumb with money.
You hovered around awkwardly as he sat in his tall black leather chair.
“You can sit.” He gestured forward.
You stood shocked, not expecting him to let you stay. You assumed he would make you take the food back to your desk and eat alone, never pegging him as one for company. Slowly you lowered yourself in one of the two chairs facing his desk. You pinched your arm under the desk to make sure you hadn’t dozed off at your desk.
“Help yourself.” He gestured to the food and tossed a pack of chopsticks towards you on the desk.
Awkwardly you sat stationary until he gestured forward again.
Carefully you chewed your food and sat silently. You were afraid to make any sudden movements. It was clear from the containers it wasn’t a mom and pop’s place he ordered from. You thought silently that the food wasn’t as good as the place you usually go to. It wasn’t greasy enough, it felt too healthy.
He didn’t pay attention to you, he was eating like a starved man. It didn’t seem like he was gonna talk anytime soon, and the silence mixed with noises of chewing was killing you, so you caved first. “Do you stay this late everyday?”
He finished chewing before answering. “Some nights.”
He glanced up at you and you automatically shifted your gaze to your food and poked your chopsticks around the container. You knew he was a hard worker, he had to be to be so self made at such a young age, but you were unaware that he would stay so late after work. If there was one thing you couldn’t criticize, it was his hard work.
