“I’m sorry hardass is making you stay late.” You looked up from your phone. Kyung Ha was standing in front of your desk with her things gathered in her hands, ready to leave.
“It’s fine. I shouldn’t have said anything, I don't know what I was thinking.”
“Yeah me either. I didn’t think you were that serious at lunch, and I definitely didn't think you would be the first one to have the balls to stand up to him. I have to say, it was pretty funny watching his face after you spoke up.” You shared a small chuckle at the memory. “I don’t know how you did it, if I was you I would have started crying.”
“Well, I learned my lesson I guess. Have fun tonight.”
Kyung Ha thought her boyfriend was going to propose tonight. Well, she thinks he will every week, but this week she was sure.
“Thanks.” She waved you off. “Goodluck.” She called behind her.
Your hand was cramping as you made marks on all of the papers you checked, and your stomach was crying out for help. It was well past dark now and you had lost track of time, not bothering to look at your phone. All you knew was that you were about 75 percent done with reviewing the reports, and you were starving. You considered trying to find something in the breakroom, but you figured it would just slow you down.
Approaching footsteps broke the silent atmosphere, your body stilled at the noise. The building was completely empty as far as you knew. You couldn’t imagine anyone else staying this late. You told yourself it might be the cleaning people.
Just in case, you sat up straight in your chair, preparing if it was an intruder. You didn’t have a weapon on you, but maybe you could throw something at them. You gripped onto your stapler as the footsteps approached.
A figure rounded the corner and at the sight you dropped the stapler, slouching your shoulders. You didn’t bother to glance at him anymore as you went back to scanning the paper front of you.
“Have you had anything to eat?” His voice was so close it startled you. You hadn’t sensed him walking up to your desk.
You scrambled for a response as those were the last words you were expecting to hear come out of his mouth.
You settled with shaking your head, “No, I’ll probably just skip dinner-”
“I ordered Chinese food. It’ll get cold soon.” He cut you off, speaking in the same intimidating tone he always adones.
With those few words he walked off towards the elevator. You sat unmoving in your chair as you watched him leave. Just as he was turning the corner he looked back at you and said, “Well, are you coming?”
You stared at him still dumbfounded. A few hours ago he was scolding you in front of everyone and now he was offering you food? It seemed suspically out of character.
Your body acted by itself, stumbling out of your seat to catch up with his quick steps. It was like he held authority over you, even when you didn’t want him to. When you finally reached the elevator he was waiting with the doors open. You shuffled to the opposite side of the elevator, but was wary of not standing too far away. You didn’t want to give him the impression that you were scared of him, even if you might’ve been.
You had never been in that close of proximity to him before. Up close he was even more striking. His level of confidence and the way he held himself alone made your cheeks heat. From the small glances you snuck you noticed his skin was so perfect it was intimidating and he smelled expensive.
