Epheremal Existance

Today is the second day. Leo's mother told me yesterday that he was fine and that he was coming home. Today I have to hide my feelings and not do anything that could allow Leo to collapse or hate me. It was going to be a long day. I walked into class and saw Leo sitting in his seat. The class was empty except for us. I walked over to my seat.

"Have you seen the tree outside the class?"

I looked over at him. He was staring out the window.

"What do you mean?"

"The big tree outside the class is shedding its leaves. I don't really like trees. Their leaves fall down and wither so quickly and most people don't bother to look at them. I guess humans are like that too. One day we're alive and the next we could end up dead."

He looked over at me and smiled. His green eyes were empty like glass. I looked away. My heart hurt and I felt as though it would crack. I did my best to hide my feelings and looked up. He was staring out the window again.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Hm? Oh, nothing. Just trying to remember something and that came into my mind. Sorry. They didn't mean anything."

"It's fine."

To be honest, his words hit a bit too close to home. Then our other classmates walked in and class started.

I'M SO EMBARRASSED! I shouldn't have done said that. She probably thinks that I'm weird. I was just voicing something that was in my mind. I didn't know she was there. After class ended, the teacher left and I sat there in my seat. Again I stared out at the window. Then someone approached me.

"Hey, Leo. How's your day so far?"

"Um, fine. Excuse me but, who are you?"

He looked at me surprised. Then he composed himself and started again.

"I'm Michael. Just call me Mike like everyone else does. I guess you really did forget everything."

"I'm sorry."

"No need to apologize."

I looked at him. He looked like one of the guys that would be really popular with the girls. He had brown hair and eyes that looked as though they could see through everything. Strangely, I felt as though he was safe. Someone who would not hurt others. Maybe it was a gut feeling but I felt as though we were once friends. Maybe he could help me get my memories back.

"You wanna go somewhere?"

I looked at him and smiled.

"Sure."

It was a regular day. I knew that Leo was someone who could adapt to his environment easily but I never knew he would be able to blend in with the class without even having his memories. It was weird. It felt as though Leo never got into an accident. The last bell rang and I walked out. Leo was still sitting in his seat, staring out the window again. Then I saw Mike approach him. I peeked at them from the side of the door. I couldn't hear them but Mike was acting weird. I didn't know what his relationship with Leo was since I was usually alone but I felt as though something horrifying would occur while Leo was with Mike. I decided to walk out and hide in order to follow them. This wasn't like me, I knew, but I didn't want Mike to do anything unnecessary. They walked out together and I followed.

"So Leo, how do you feel after coming back to school."

Mike and I were at a park. We had gone to get some smoothies and ended up here.

"I'm still a bit confused about everything. I thought maybe going to school might help recover my memories or something but it looks like it won't work."

"Just wait a bit and maybe they'll come back."

"Sure. Hey, could you tell me anything you might know about me and anything that happened between us? You looked surprised to see my memories were gone and I thought you might know something."

"Hm... Let's see. You and I were best friends and you were on the soccer team while I was on the football team. You hung out with Skyler White a lot and she's your childhood friend. Your grades are pretty high. I think that's about it."

I looked at him in disbelief then stared at the ground. Skyler didn't tell me we were childhood friends. There was so much that I don't know.

"Hey Leo, could you do me a favor?"

"What is it?"

"I actually like Skyler and I was hoping you could help me out. You seemed pretty close but it looked as though you guys didn't have a relationship so..."

I didn't know what to say but there was an aching pain in my heart. I felt as though something bad might happen if I helped Mike but if he used to be my friend, maybe I should help him.

"Sure. I'll do my best."

Mike's eyes brightened a bit and he got up and thanked me. Then I heard some movement behind a tree and it stopped. Mike got up and left and after a while, I left too. I never knew that helping him could bring so much pain to my heart until the next day.
