Chapter four

Mom walked past the kitchen with a basket of clothes but backtracked upon seeing me sitting at the island.

I looked away from her and took another bite of my apple pie. It seems I'll be the only one enjoying it this year.

"What are you doing? Why are you home?"

Confused, I looked up at mom. "Ugh...school doesn't start until next week." I reminded her. Maybe she forgot?

"No, why are you in my house? Don't you have friends to go play with?" I stared at her with a blank expression for awhile. Did she want me to admit that I have no friends? Like none. Not even an acquaintance that I can say hi to in passing. Not even a human friend. It's embarrassing and sad really.

We heard Kai coming long before he actually entered the kitchen. He was dressed in his usual plaid shirt and worn jeans and mom looked at his outfit with distaste.

"You should shave, sweetie." Mom suggested as Kai opened the fridge for a bottle of water. His beard wasn't messy, at least not to me. It looked like he kept it trimmed and there was never food in it.

Kai just shrugged in response to mom and I ate the last piece of pie on my plate.

"Jimin go get dressed, you're going with Kai."

"What?" We said together, Kai saying it a bit more angrily. I hesitantly looked over at him. We've never really intentionally hung out. In fact, I would go as far to say he avoids going out in public with me. A fact that I use to cry about actually.

"He can't come with us." Kai grumbled.

"And why ever not?!" Mom snapped. We all knew she was going to get her way. Biting my lip nervously, I put my dirty dishes in the sink before going up to my room.

I was hopping into a pair of jeans when I heard the now familiar rumble. Pulling back the curtains, I watched Taehyung pull in front of the house, ignoring the driveway. He stepped out in all black today and leaned back against his car with his arms folded over his wide chest.

When he removed his glasses and looked up at me, I stuck up my middle finger and laughed when he clutched at his chest as if in pain. Backing away, I pulled on my converse and ran back downstairs to where Kai was still grumbling to mom.

"Bye, have fun!" Mom said, waving for Kai to bend down so she could kiss his cheek. She didn't have to do that with me and instead had to bend down herself to kiss my cheek. I smiled and waved bye as I followed a grumpy Kai.

Tae pushed off his car when we made it to him and raised a thick brow in question, looking between the two of us. "Mom made me bring him." Kai said gruffly while walking around to get in the passenger seat.

"That's okay, little Jimin can tag along." Tae teased.

"Thanks, Taehyung." I said with a cheerful smile that became genuine when his jaw ticked.

"Get in." He said, opening the door and pulling his seat up so I could climb in the back. It was a good thing I'm small because there's barely any room back here.

After I was seated, Tae fixed his seat and got in. "Buckle up." I told the both of them while buckling myself in. They grumbled but listened anyways. "So where are we going?" Truthfully, I was always excited when mom made Kai take me with him. I finally got to hang around my big brother and I'd never say it aloud or tell him, but Tae was pretty cool too. More than a few times they'd end up ditching me somewhere but I take what I get.

"Town." Kai said shortly.

Tae chuckled and opened the glove compartment, pulling out a cassette tape. "We're going to the fair."

"Really?!" I gasped, bouncing a little in excitement. I liked going to the county fair, for the food of course. Its not so fun when you're by yourself. Maybe it'll be different with Kai and Tae there with me.

Some slow rock song started playing and I sat back and looked out the window. Tae and Kai would talk between each other but the twenty minute ride to town was mostly quiet.

Tae parked in front of the small ice cream parlor and I handed him his leather jacket when I climbed out. The fair was always held at the baseball field behind the strip of businesses.

I had to jog a few times to catch up with their long strides but for the most part, it didn't seem like they were intentionally trying to leave me behind.

"What should we do first? Maybe get a funnel cake! Or, or we can do that game where we can win a fish!" The one time I actually won a fish, it died the next day. Probably from carrying it around in a bag for so long. "Um, I think we should win a fish last." I decided. They didn't respond so I took that as an agreement.

We didn't have to stand in line long and Kai and Tae only paid for access but I got some tickets for the Farris wheel, which is pretty much the only ride not for small children. I followed behind them closely, noticing a few of our pack mates but there were humans too. The smell of popcorn and fried food was heavy in the air. Peoples easy laughter and children's squeals of excitement made everything seem more alive.

They didn't seem to be going anywhere specific and everything was going fine for awhile. It's true what they say about good things not lasting forever.

"Didn't you want a funnel cake?" Kai asked. I knew he wasn't really asking and I took the hint to stop following them. Standing there for awhile, watching them get lost in the crowd and then spinning in circles, I decided to just go get food.

The line for a funnel cake was long but I didn't mind. It's not like there's anyone waiting for me. I watched a group of young humans where they stood around talking and laughing. That's when I started to wonder if living as a human would be so bad. In school they didn't talk to me because majority of our classmates are Wolves and they made it so I wasn't approachable. Like talking to me would be social suicide. It was my own kind that secluded me from everything and then made it so everyone else did too. What would it be like living in a city populated mostly by humans?

After getting a funnel cake, a corn dog, and a basket of french fries, I went to the picnic tables and sat at a empty one. Stuffing a fry in my mouth, I looked around awkwardly.

Onyx eyes met my own and I smiled at dad in his police uniform. When he didn't smile back my own slipped and I looked back down at my food. This wasn't so fun anymore and it was a reminder of why I stopped coming to these things.

A basket of fries sat down across from me and I looked up.

"Hey pup."

"Hey dad." I didn't try to smile again and started eating my corn dog. Dad didn't talk but he never really does, I guess that's where Kai gets it from. He eventually left because he was technically supposed to be working and I got up to wonder around again.

I was contemplating walking home until I caught sight of yoongi in a brown sweater and dark jeans. He was with his friends Namjoon and Jeongguk but I didn't care. I put on my biggest smile.

"Hi!" I chirped excitedly, gaining all of their attention.

"Hey,Jimin." Yoongi said and I almost melted. I can't wait until my birthday. You see, I know we'll be Mates because yoongi already turned eighteen but he can't feel the bond until I'm eighteen too!

"Whatcha up to?"

Yoongi scratched the back of his neck, looking around. "Nothing really, just walking around."

"No,Jimin, you can't come with." Jeongguk chuckled, somehow knowing what I was going to ask. I ignored him.

"Oh, I came here with Tae and Kai." I said absently, my eyes tracing Yoongi’s clean jaw up to his light brown eyes. They reminded me of caramel. I should get a candy apple.

"Tae’s here?" Jeongguk asked, finally looking down at me. I smiled big and nodded. "Well um...we should go find him."

"No, we don't need your help." Jeongguk snickered. My mouth opened but no words came out. Yoongi offered a smile before the three walked around me.

My shoulders sagged and I turned the opposite way to go to the Farris wheel. Maybe I should of asked Yoongi to ride with me.

I handed the guy my tickets and he made sure the bar was locked. The ride up was slow because people were getting on still but when I was at the top, I could see everything. It felt like I was on top of the world.

I could see dad talking with some of the other officers, all Wolves. I finally found Kai and Tae. They were at a game with a group of people, Tae had some female hanging off him while he threw darts and Kai was off to the side talking with another female. The Farris wheel started moving when I caught sight of Yoongi and his friends again. Yoongi wore a bright smile that made me smile but it was quickly replaced with a frown when I noticed he was talking to Kelly Webb.

The ride went around another time before stopping to let people off. When it was my turn to get off, I smiled politely at the older male before slipping down the stairs and falling in front of the long line of people. My face burned from embarrassment as they laughed. Some were nice enough to try and be discreet about it but others laughed without a care.

I scrambled up and ran in the direction I'd last seen my brother. It wasn't a good idea and I bumped into someone, cold soda spilling down the front of my hoodie. I gasped, pulling the drenched fabric away from my skin.

"Watch where the **** you're going." The guy growled. I nodded, apologizing quickly before walking around him. I didn't run this time and I did watch where I was going.

Kai wasn't at the game they were at but he wasn't far. He was talking to some dark haired female who was eating cotton candy. Hesitantly, I tapped his shoulder and he looked back at me. His smile fell as he took in my soaked hoodie.

"Really,Jimin? It hasn't even been three hours." I fidgeted with my fingers, not really knowing what to say. I wasn't going to ask if we could leave, if that's what he thought. I just wanted to stay with them the rest of our time here.

The female Kai was talking to moved beside him and looked me over. "How do you know the Runt?"

"He's my brother."

"Woah."

"Yeah." Kai grumbled, turning away from me.

After standing around for twenty minutes, I left them and the fair grounds behind. Instead, I sat on the curb in front of the closed ice cream parlor so I was by Taehyung’s car. I didn't want to be left behind.

I didn't even get a fish.
