I stared at Frederick, waiting for him to defend me.
He didn't.
His mother reached across the table and squeezed the woman's hand.
“She understands my son better,” she said.
The woman lowered her eyes.
I noticed the expensive bracelet on her wrist.
Frederick had given me the exact same bracelet for our anniversary.
My stomach twisted.
“Who is she?” I whispered.
His mother answered proudly.
“My son's mistress.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Frederick finally stood.
“Lisa, please—”
“Please what?”
His mother laughed.
Then she repeated those same words.
“I am so happy that my son has found himself a good woman. I’m so proud of him.”
This time, nobody laughed.
I removed my wedding ring.
Frederick's face changed.
But before I could leave, his mistress whispered,
“Lisa… there's something you don't know about your husband.”
