Chapter One — The Boy Everyone Feared
The first thing I learned about Daniel Cole was that he never apologized.
The second thing I learned was that he never had to.
At Kingsbridge Academy, his name carried more weight than most teachers' names.
Daniel Cole.
Just hearing it was enough to make students lower their voices.
He was the boy who walked through the school gates late and somehow got away with it.
The boy who could miss an assignment and convince a teacher that the assignment had somehow been misplaced.
The boy whose friends followed him everywhere.
And, unfortunately for me, the boy who had decided that I was entertaining.
It started on a Monday morning.
I was standing beside my locker, struggling with a broken zip on my schoolbag, when someone knocked the books from my hands.
They scattered across the floor.
I froze.
Slowly, I looked up.
Daniel stood in front of me.
His tie was loose, his shirt wasn't properly tucked in, and there was that familiar amused expression on his face.
"Oops."
I stared at him.
"You did that on purpose."
He shrugged.
"Did I?"
"Yes."
"Then prove it."
I bent down and began collecting my books.
He didn't help.
Of course he didn't.
Instead, he crouched down beside me.
"You know," he said, "you should really stop looking so angry all the time."
"I'm not angry."
"You are."
"I'm annoyed."
He smiled.
"At me?"
"Always."
For a second, his smile disappeared.
Then he laughed.
That was Daniel.
He could turn almost anything into a joke.
I grabbed the last book and stood.
"Stay away from me."
He leaned against the locker.
"Why?"
"Because you're annoying."
"That's not a good enough reason."
"It is to me."
I walked away.
Behind me, I heard him laugh.
I didn't know it then, but that conversation would be the beginning of the biggest disaster of my life.
Because Daniel Cole wasn't going to stay away from me.
And somehow, against every decision I made afterward, I wasn't going to stay away from him either.
Chapter Two — A Problem Called Daniel
By lunchtime, everyone knew Daniel had annoyed me.
I didn't understand how information traveled so quickly in school.
Tomi dropped into the seat opposite me in the cafeteria.
"So," she said.
I continued eating.
"So?"
"Don't 'so' me. What did Daniel do?"
"Nothing."
She stared at me.
"Amara."
I sighed.
"He knocked my books down."
"That's it?"
"Yes."
"And you look like you're preparing for war."
"Because he did it deliberately."
Tomi laughed.
"You know he likes irritating you."
"Then he should find someone else."
"Maybe he finds you interesting."
I nearly choked on my drink.
"Daniel Cole does not find me interesting."
Tomi raised an eyebrow.
"You sure?"
"Very."
Across the cafeteria, Daniel was sitting with his friends.
As if he could feel me looking, he turned.
Our eyes met.
He smiled.
I immediately looked away.
Tomi noticed.
"Oh."
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Tomi."
She grinned.
"This is going to be interesting."
"It isn't."
"It definitely is."
I shook my head.
"Whatever you're thinking, stop."
She laughed.
But neither of us knew what was coming.
Because that afternoon, our English teacher announced a project.
And when she read out the groups, my heart sank.
"Amara Okafor and Daniel Cole."
The entire classroom went silent.
Then someone at the back whispered,
"She's finished."
The class erupted in laughter.
I closed my eyes.
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
For the first time that day, he wasn't smiling.
He looked at me.
Then he said quietly,
"Looks like you're stuck with me."
I glared at him.
"This is going to be the worst project of my life."
He smiled again.
"Probably."
And somehow, I knew he was right.
