*Chapter 1: The Day I Stopped Believing In Love*
The rain came down in sheets that night, pounding against the windshield like it was trying to wash the world clean.
I shouldn’t have come.
But five years of "I trust you" and "I love you" made me stupid. Made me believe that when Mark said he was working late, he actually meant work.
Room 402.
The hotel clerk didn’t even look at me when I gave him the name.
My hands shook as I lifted the key card.
The door wasn’t fully closed.
And then I heard it.
Her laugh.
His voice.
"Come here, baby."
The same voice that used to whisper my name at 2 AM.
The same hands that held mine during my mother’s funeral.
I pushed the door open.
Mark froze. Sheets tangled around him. And under him, a girl I didn’t know. Younger. Blonde. Laughing like this was a joke.
For a second, nobody moved.
Rain dripped from my hair onto the hotel carpet.
My heart didn’t break.
It didn’t shatter.
It just… stopped.
Five years.
Gone.
"Abigail," he started, scrambling. "It’s not—"
I didn’t let him finish.
What was there to say?
I turned around and walked out.
Into the rain.
Into a new life.
*Six Months Later*
Six months later, I stood in front of XYZ Tower with a CV in one hand and a promise in the other.
_No men. Ever again._
Love was a scam.
And I was done being the fool.
The HR lady smiled. "Your first day as Mr. Carter’s PA. He’s… particular."
I nodded. I could do particular. I could do cold. I could do anything as long as it didn’t involve my heart.
The elevator doors opened.
And there he was.
Tall. Dark suit. Eyes like ice.
Mr. Daniel Carter. CEO. Billionaire. My new boss.
He looked at me once.
My heart, the one I had buried six months ago, did something stupid.
It skipped.
_No,_ I told myself. _Not again. Never again._
But why, then, was it beating so fast?
