_Peace made them soft. The blizzard reminds them they’re not._

_Year 3. Winter. Day 1._
It started with wind.
Not Zhang Wei’s wind. This one was natural. Cruel.
3 days. No sun.
The Northern border froze. Crops died. Rivers locked.
50,000 people trapped in mountain villages.
_Li Haku_ slammed the reports on the table.
_“Granaries are low. We sent everything to rebuild Southern Sea last spring.”_
_“Then we send more,”_ _Zhanyi_ said.
_“With what?”_ _Mian_ asked. _“The roads are gone.”_
_Zhang Wei_ hadn’t spoken. He was watching the snow hit the window.
_“I can get through,”_ he said.
Everyone turned.
_“It’s my storm,”_ he said. _“Not me, but I can walk in it. Bring food.”_
_“Alone?”_ _Xue Yan_ snapped. _“You’ll burn yourself out.”_
_“I’m a ghost,”_ Zhang Wei said. _“Burning is kind of my thing.”_
Zhanyi stood.
_“We go together.”_

*Day 4. Northern Border. The Blizzard.*
White. Nothing but white.
The army couldn’t move. Horses couldn’t breathe.
So Zhanyi, Zhang Wei, Xue Yan, and 20 Remnants went on foot.
Drag sleds. Food. Medicine. Cloth.
Zhang Wei walked in front. He wasn’t cold. Snow bent around him.
Every hour he’d turn back. Check Zhanyi.
_“Still with me?”_
_“Always,”_ she’d say. Lightning keeping her warm.
By Day 6 they reached the first village.
People were dying.
Zhang Wei didn’t give speeches. He just unloaded the sleds.
Built fires with frost. Carried kids inside.
Zhanyi set up triage. Lightning to sterilize. To keep people alive.
A village elder grabbed Zhang Wei’s sleeve.
_“Ghost King. You came back.”_
_“I never left,”_ Zhang Wei said.
They stayed 3 days. Fed everyone. Dug out the roads.
On Day 10, a rider came through the storm.
Northern Frost banner. But white flag.
The rider knelt in the snow. To Zhang Wei.
_“Message from the Northern King,”_ he said.
_“Second offer.”_
He read it:
_“The blizzard will last 30 more days. Your people will die.
Surrender the Ghost King to us. We will stop the storm.
Give us him, and we give you spring.
Refuse, and we watch your kingdom freeze.”_
Silence. Only wind.
Xue Yan drew her sword.
_“Tell your king—”_
_“No,”_ Zhang Wei said. Quiet.
He took the letter. Read it.
Then burned it with a touch.
_“Tell your king,”_ he said to the rider. _“I am not for sale. Not for spring. Not for anything.”_
The rider left.
---
*Night. In the village hut.*
Zhanyi was wrapping Zhang Wei’s hands. Frostbite, even on him.
_“You could have said yes,”_ she said. _“They’d stop. People would live.”_
_“For 30 days,”_ Zhang Wei said. _“Then what? They’d ask again. And again.”_
_“You’d be gone,”_ Zhanyi said.
_“I’d rather be gone than let them use you to get me,”_ Zhang Wei said.
He looked at her.
_“I’m not the price of your kingdom, Zhanyi. I’m the partner in it.”_
Zhanyi leaned her forehead against his.
_“Stubborn ghost.”_
_“Your ghost,”_ he said.
Outside, the storm howled.
Zhanyi stood.
_“Then we beat the storm.”_
_“How?”_ Xue Yan asked.
_“The same way we beat everything,”_ Zhanyi said. _“Together.”_
---
*Day 15. The Solution.*
They didn’t fight the blizzard. They outworked it.
Zhang Wei couldn’t stop it. But he could redirect it.
Zhanyi couldn’t melt it. But she could strike it.
Together: lightning to crack ice, frost to make paths.
For 15 days they didn’t sleep.
Army followed. Civilians followed.
They dug canals, built shelters, moved entire villages to lower ground.
On Day 30, the blizzard stopped.
Not because of the Northern King.
Because they survived it.
The Northern King sent one more letter. No demands. Just:
_“...well played.”_
---
*Night. Back in the Capital.*
Everyone was exhausted. But alive.
Zhanyi and Zhang Wei sat on the roof. Again.
Blankets. Tea. No armor.
_“Second offer rejected,”_ Zhanyi said.
_“Second winter survived,”_ Zhang Wei said.
He bumped her shoulder.
_“You’re terrible at peace, you know.”_
_“You’re worse,”_ Zhanyi said. _“You make me want to keep it.”_
Zhang Wei looked at the stars. Clear now.
_“No one is taking you from me. Not with gold. Not with storms.”_
_“Good,”_ Zhanyi said. _“Because I’m not going anywhere.”_
_Northern Blizzard survived. Second offer refused. The kingdom chose hardship over betrayal._
