Chapter 13: The Girl Who Defied Fate
The rooftop fell silent after Sophie's disappearance.
Ariana stood frozen, Sophie's final words echoing in her mind.
> "The person responsible for our tragedy... was never me alone."
The cold night wind swept across the rooftop as Elena wrapped her trembling fingers around Ariana's hand.
"What did she mean?" Elena whispered.
Lillian shook her head.
"I don't know."
Maya lowered her gaze.
"There are still memories we haven't recovered."
Ariana looked at the old letter in her hands.
For a moment, she thought about giving up.
She was tired of chasing fragments of a painful past. Every answer only led to more questions.
But then Elena squeezed her hand tighter.
"We've come this far," Elena said. "Let's learn the whole truth."
Ariana nodded.
"Together."
---
The next day, the four girls gathered in the abandoned music room at school.
Dust covered the old piano in the corner, and faded curtains blocked most of the sunlight.
Lillian placed a small wooden box on the table.
"I found this hidden in the archives," she explained.
Maya's eyes widened.
"I remember that box."
Ariana slowly opened it.
Inside were photographs, dried cherry blossoms, and several letters tied together with a blue ribbon.
One photograph immediately caught Ariana's attention.
It showed all four girls smiling beneath the cherry blossom tree.
Ariana.
Elena.
Maya.
Sophie.
Written on the back were the words:
> Friends forever. No matter what fate decides.
Tears filled Ariana's eyes.
"We were really happy once," she whispered.
Elena smiled sadly.
"Before everything fell apart."
As Ariana picked up the last letter, a sharp pain spread through her head.
Memories flooded back.
She saw herself standing beneath the cherry blossom tree.
Sophie was crying.
"I can't lose you," Sophie said desperately.
Elena stepped forward.
"Sophie, you'll always be important to us."
"But not the way I want to be!" Sophie shouted.
Suddenly, another voice interrupted.
A voice Ariana had completely forgotten.
"You've become a problem."
Ariana gasped.
The memory shifted.
She saw a woman standing nearby.
A teacher.
Someone they trusted completely.
Their homeroom teacher from their previous life.
Miss Catherine.
The woman smiled gently in front of others.
But behind closed doors, her eyes were cold.
> "People like you only bring shame," Miss Catherine had whispered.
Ariana's body trembled.
"It wasn't just Sophie," she said.
Everyone stared at her.
"The teacher..."
"What?" Maya asked.
"Our teacher manipulated Sophie's pain."
Ariana struggled to breathe as more memories returned.
Miss Catherine had discovered Elena and Ariana's relationship.
Instead of helping them, she used Sophie's jealousy.
She convinced Sophie that Ariana was the reason for everyone's suffering.
Little by little, Sophie's heartbreak transformed into obsession.
Elena covered her mouth.
"No..."
Lillian's face turned pale.
"Miss Catherine was the one we trusted the most."
Ariana nodded slowly.
"She turned us against each other."
Maya burst into tears.
"I remember now."
"She told us she wanted to protect us."
"But she destroyed everything."
The room fell silent.
For years, they had blamed Sophie alone.
But Sophie had been manipulated by someone who fed her loneliness and fear.
Suddenly, the classroom door creaked open.
Everyone looked up.
Sophie stood there.
She looked exhausted.
Dark circles rested beneath her eyes.
"You finally remembered," she said softly.
Ariana stood up.
"You knew."
Sophie nodded.
"I tried to fight her."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"But I was weak."
She looked at Elena.
"I loved you so much that I stopped caring about what was right."
Elena approached her carefully.
"You hurt us," Elena said honestly.
Sophie's shoulders shook.
"I know."
"I can never undo what I did."
Ariana looked at the girl before her.
This wasn't the terrifying villain from her nightmares.
This was a broken girl carrying guilt from another lifetime.
"Why did you come back?" Ariana asked.
Sophie wiped away her tears.
"Because Miss Catherine is here."
The room froze.
"What?" Maya whispered.
Sophie nodded.
"She was reborn too."
"She's been watching all of us."
Fear spread across Ariana's face.
"Who is she now?"
Sophie's lips trembled.
"I don't know."
"But she's closer than you think."
At that moment, the school bell echoed through the empty corridors.
Footsteps approached outside the music room.
Slow.
Steady.
The door handle turned.
Click.
Ariana instinctively grabbed Elena's hand.
The door slowly opened.
A familiar figure stood in the doorway.
The woman smiled kindly.
"Girls," she said gently.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
Ariana's heart stopped.
Standing before them was their new guidance counselor.
The woman everyone admired.
The woman who always offered advice with a warm smile.
Mrs. Evelyn.
And as she looked directly at Ariana, her smile widened ever so slightly.
"You remember me now, don't you?" she whispered.
The blood drained from Ariana's face.
The true enemy had finally revealed herself.
And fate had just begun its final game.
