Chapter 12: The Truth Hidden in the Rain
The night after the school festival felt unusually quiet.
The fireworks had faded from the sky, but the fear in Ariana's heart remained.
She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the old diary lying on her desk. Every page seemed to whisper secrets from a life she had once lived and forgotten.
A soft knock sounded at her window.
"Ariana," Elena called from outside.
Ariana quickly opened the window.
"What are you doing here?" she asked in surprise.
Elena climbed onto the balcony with a nervous smile.
"I couldn't sleep."
Neither could Ariana.
The memories returning to them had become impossible to ignore.
Elena sat beside her.
"Do you think Maya was telling the truth?" she asked quietly.
Ariana looked down at the diary.
"I don't know. But I don't think she's our enemy."
Before Elena could respond, Ariana opened the diary again.
Something caught her attention.
A folded piece of paper had appeared between two pages that had previously been blank.
Her hands trembled as she unfolded it.
Written in familiar handwriting were the words:
If you're reading this, it means our memories have returned. Please don't hate Maya. She only wanted to protect us. The real danger is someone we trusted the most.
Ariana's eyes widened.
"The real danger..." she whispered.
Elena read the message over her shoulder.
"Someone we trusted?"
Suddenly, another memory flashed before Ariana's eyes.
A rainy evening.
Four girls standing beneath umbrellas.
Lillian crying.
Maya shouting.
Someone smiling warmly before turning away.
Then...
A push.
A scream.
Darkness.
Ariana gasped and clutched her chest.
"I remembered something."
Elena held her hand tightly.
"What did you see?"
"There were four of us," Ariana said shakily. "You, me, Maya, and Lillian."
"Lillian was crying."
"Maya was trying to stop someone."
"But I couldn't see the fourth person's face."
Before Elena could answer, Ariana's phone buzzed.
It was a message from Maya.
Meet me at the old cherry blossom tree behind the school. Come alone. There's something you deserve to know.
Elena frowned.
"This could be dangerous."
Ariana nodded.
"But it could also be the truth we've been searching for."
Rain began falling outside.
The same rain Ariana had seen in her memories.
By the time Ariana reached the cherry blossom tree, her uniform was soaked.
Maya stood beneath the tree, holding an umbrella.
"You came," Maya said softly.
"Tell me everything," Ariana demanded.
Maya looked up at the dark sky.
"In our previous life, we were best friends."
"We protected each other."
"We laughed together."
Tears filled her eyes.
"But someone became obsessed with changing fate."
Ariana's heartbeat quickened.
"Who?"
Maya lowered her head.
"Her name was Sophie."
"Sophie?" Ariana repeated.
"She loved Elena," Maya whispered. "But Elena chose you."
Ariana froze.
"Sophie couldn't accept it."
"At first, she acted like our friend."
"She smiled."
"She supported us."
"But inside..."
Maya's voice broke.
"She blamed you for taking away the person she loved."
A flash of lightning illuminated the sky.
Ariana suddenly remembered.
A beautiful girl smiling beneath falling cherry blossoms.
The same girl whispering—
'If I can't have Elena... no one will.'
Ariana stumbled backward.
"No..."
Maya nodded through tears.
"Sophie caused the tragedy that destroyed all of us."
Footsteps echoed nearby.
A familiar voice drifted through the rain.
"So..."
"I've finally been remembered."
Ariana slowly turned around.
Standing a few feet away was a girl with long dark hair and a gentle smile.
A transfer student who had arrived just weeks ago.
Someone everyone adored.
Someone no one suspected.
Sophie smiled sweetly as rain fell around her.
"You really shouldn't have remembered," she said softly.
Elena appeared beside Ariana, breathing heavily.
"I won't let you hurt her again," Elena declared.
Sophie's smile never faded.
"You said the same thing in our last life."
She took one step forward.
"And look how that ended."
Thunder roared across the sky.
Ariana tightened her grip on Elena's hand.
This time, they remembered everything.
And this time...
They refused to let fate steal their future.
