The group chat was supposed to be silent at two in the morning.
Supposed to.
Instead, Taehyung was aggressively kicking his blanket while staring at his phone screen with the expression of a man experiencing all five stages of grief at once.
Jimin had made the mistake of asking:
"So? Did Jungkook look good today or what?"
Which, honestly, was cruel.
Because now Taehyung had been typing for the past seven minutes straight.
Message
Taehyung: "Good" is an understatement.
Taehyung: That man wore a black hoodie and suddenly I understood why people write poetry.
Taehyung: And his HAIR???
Taehyung: He pushed it back once and I swear my soul left my body.
Taehyung: I actually hate him.
Taehyung: Why is he so pretty???
Taehyung: And don't even get me started on his smile today.
Taehyung: He smiled at me during practice and I forgot the choreography for five whole seconds.
Taehyung sighed dramatically before pressing send.
Then froze.
His eyes slowly widened.
The room became horrifyingly quiet.
Because the chat name at the top did not say:
Jimin 🐥
It said:
Bangtan 💜
Taehyung stopped breathing.
No.
No no no no-
His fingers moved so fast he almost dropped his phone trying to unsend everything.
Too late.
Seen.
By everyone.
The messages sat there in the group chat like public execution evidence.
Then-
Message
Jimin: OH MY GOD
Hobi: TAEHYUNG 😭😭😭
Namjoon: Well this is fascinating.
Yoongi: I was having a peaceful night too.
Jin: So this is why you've been acting weird lately.
Taehyung: I HAVE SENT IT TO THE WRONG GROUP.
Three dots appeared instantly.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Taehyung wanted the earth to split open and swallow him whole.
And then Jungkook finally replied.
Message
Jungkook: Continue. I'm listening 🙂
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Taehyung stared at the message like it had personally ruined his life.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group completely lost control.
Message
Hobi: HE'S FLIRTING
Jimin: TAEHYUNG SAY SOMETHING
Jin: I need popcorn for this.
Yoongi: I'm staying awake for entertainment purposes.
Taehyung threw his phone onto the bed and buried his face into his pillow with a strangled groan.
This was it.
This was how he died.
A notification buzzed again.
Private message from Jungkook.
Taehyung hesitated before opening it.
Message
Jungkook: Did you really forget the choreography because of me?
Taehyung: No.
Jungkook: Liar.
Taehyung: I hate you.
Jungkook: You literally called me pretty five times.
Taehyung: I'm blocking you.
A picture arrived instantly.
It was Jungkook.
Current time
Current moment.
Black hoodie.
Messy hair.
And the worst part?
That stupid smirk on his face.
Message
Jungkook: Still hate me?
Taehyung genuinely considered throwing himself out the window.
Instead, he typed furiously.
Message
Taehyung: You're enjoying this way too much.
Jungkook: Maybe.
Taehyung: You're evil.
Jungkook: But I'm pretty, apparently.
Taehyung slapped a hand over his eyes.
Why was Jungkook like this?
Why was he making this worse?
Another message appeared.
Message
Jungkook: So...
Jungkook: Which smile were you talking about?
Taehyung's heartbeat immediately betrayed him.
He typed.
Deleted.
Typed again.
Deleted again.
Meanwhile Jungkook sent another message.
Message
Jungkook: The one during practice?
Jungkook: Or the one I gave you after you almost walked into the mirror because you were staring at me?
Taehyung sat upright instantly.
Message
Taehyung: YOU SAW THAT?
Three dots.
Message
Jungkook: Taehyung-ah.
Jungkook: I notice everything when it comes to you.
And just like that-
The teasing stopped feeling playful.
Taehyung's chest tightened.
Because suddenly this didn't feel like humiliation anymore.
It felt dangerous in a completely different way.
His fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Message
Taehyung: Jungkook.
Taehyung: Are you messing with me right now?
The reply came almost immediately.
Message
Jungkook: No.
Jungkook: I think I liked the compliments a little too much.
Taehyung blinked slowly.
Once.
Twice.
His brain completely stopped functioning.
Then another message appeared.
Message
Jungkook: Especially the part where you said my smile makes you forget things.
Jungkook: Because your smile does the exact same thing to me.
Oh.
Oh.
Taehyung pressed his phone against his forehead dramatically.
This couldn't be real.
There was no way this was real.
Message
Taehyung: I was supposed to send those to Jimin.
Jungkook: Best mistake you've ever made then 🙂
And honestly?
Taehyung hated how hard he was smiling at his screen after that.
Taehyung stared at the last message for a full minute.
Then another.
Then another.
Because there was absolutely no way Jeon Jungkook had just confessed to him at two-thirty in the morning after bullying him for twenty minutes straight.
His face burned hotter the longer he looked at the screen.
Meanwhile Jungkook was still online.
Waiting.
Taehyung typed.
Deleted.
Typed again.
Deleted again.
He finally sent the bravest thing he could think of.
Message
Taehyung: Don't flirt with me right now.
Jungkook: Why not?
Taehyung: Because I'm already fighting for my life here.
Jungkook reacted with a laughing emoji.
A whole laughing emoji.
Taehyung gasped dramatically at the disrespect.
Then-
Message
Jungkook: Open your door.
Taehyung frowned immediately.
Message
Taehyung: What?
Jungkook: Your door.
Jungkook: I'm outside.
Taehyung's soul left his body for the second time that night.
He practically tripped over his blanket running toward the door before yanking it open-
And there Jungkook stood.
Black hoodie.
Messy hair.
Hands shoved into his pockets.
Smiling.
Actually smiling.
Taehyung regretted every compliment instantly because none of them had been enough.
"You're insane," Taehyung whispered.
Jungkook leaned against the doorframe casually. "You sent a full paragraph about my smile to seven people."
"That was PRIVATE."
"Not anymore."
Taehyung groaned loudly and covered his face. "Please leave."
"No."
"That wasn't a request."
Jungkook laughed softly.
And god, that stupid laugh was going to ruin Taehyung's entire life.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
The hallway suddenly felt too small.
Too warm.
Too quiet.
Then Jungkook tilted his head slightly.
"So," he said softly, "did you mean all of it?"
Taehyung peeked at him through his fingers. "You already know I did."
"I want to hear you say it."
Taehyung stared at him in disbelief. "You're actually enjoying my suffering."
"A little."
"Jungkook."
"Taehyung."
The smile on Jungkook's face turned gentler this time.
Less teasing.
More nervous.
Which somehow made Taehyung even more nervous too.
Jungkook looked down for a second before speaking again.
"I think..." he started quietly, "I started liking you a long time ago."
Taehyung's breath caught immediately.
"And every time you looked away when I caught you staring," Jungkook continued, smiling faintly, "I thought maybe I was imagining things."
"You weren't," Taehyung admitted weakly.
"I know that now."
Their eyes met.
And suddenly Taehyung understood why people in movies always looked so stupidly emotional during confession scenes.
Because his heart was genuinely doing somersaults.
Jungkook stepped a little closer.
Not enough to touch.
Just enough for Taehyung to notice the faint smell of his shampoo.
"You know," Jungkook murmured, "you never finished your compliments."
Taehyung blinked. "You're still on that?"
"Mhm."
"You're unbelievable."
Jungkook grinned. "Continue. I'm still listening."
Taehyung rolled his eyes dramatically even as his heartbeat sped up.
"Fine," he muttered. "Your eyes are pretty too."
Jungkook smiled wider.
"And your piercings are unfairly attractive."
"Keep going."
"And your voice-"
Taehyung stopped abruptly.
Because Jungkook had moved closer again.
Close enough now that Taehyung forgot how thoughts worked.
Jungkook looked entirely too pleased about it.
"My voice what?" he asked quietly.
Taehyung swallowed hard.
"Dangerous," he whispered.
For once, Jungkook looked affected too.
His smile softened into something unbearably fond.
Then-
A loud notification sound shattered the moment.
Both of them jumped.
Taehyung slowly looked down at his phone.
The group chat.
Message
Jimin: Is he kissing you yet or do I need to intervene?
Hobi: LIVE UPDATES PLEASE
Jin: I raised you two better than this.
Yoongi: 20 bucks says Taehyung is malfunctioning right now.
Namjoon: I already lost 20 bucks because Jungkook confessed first.
Taehyung stared at the messages in horror.
Jungkook burst into laughter beside him.
"Oh my god," Taehyung groaned. "They knew?"
Jungkook shrugged innocently. "Probably before we did."
Taehyung covered his face again.
"This is the worst day of my life."
Jungkook gently pulled his hands away from his face.
His expression turned soft again.
Warm.
"Really?" he asked quietly.
Taehyung looked at him.
At the fond smile.
At the way Jungkook was looking at him like he was something precious.
And unfortunately-
Unfortunately, Taehyung was completely gone for him.
"...Maybe not the worst," he admitted.
Jungkook smiled.
Then finally, finally leaned in closer and whispered:
"Good 🙂"
The hallway had gone quiet again after the group chat chaos.
Too quiet.
Taehyung could still hear his own heartbeat.
Jungkook was standing ridiculously close now, his smile softer than before, eyes warm under the dim light.
And Taehyung suddenly realized something terrifying.
He wasn't embarrassed anymore.
Not really.
Because somewhere between the teasing, the confession, and Jungkook showing up outside his room at nearly three in the morning-
Something had shifted.
Jungkook looked at him carefully. "What are you thinking about?"
Taehyung huffed quietly. "How this is somehow your fault."
"My fault?" Jungkook laughed softly.
"Yes. If you weren't so-"
He stopped himself too late.
Jungkook's eyebrow lifted immediately. "So what?"
Taehyung looked away. "Annoying."
"Liar."
"Insufferable."
"Another lie."
Taehyung clicked his tongue.
Jungkook stepped closer again until Taehyung's back lightly touched the door.
"Try again," Jungkook murmured.
Taehyung looked up at him.
Big mistake.
Because Jungkook was looking at him with that expression again.
That unbearably gentle one.
The kind that made Taehyung's chest ache.
"You make me nervous," Taehyung admitted quietly.
Jungkook's expression softened instantly.
"Good," he whispered.
Taehyung blinked. "Good?"
"Mhm." Jungkook smiled faintly. "Because you make me nervous too."
And honestly?
That confession hit harder than anything else that night.
Not the teasing.
Not the flirting.
Not even the accidental messages.
Just this.
Jungkook standing in front of him looking equally affected.
Equally gone.
Taehyung laughed softly under his breath, almost disbelieving.
"What?" Jungkook asked.
"I spent months trying not to make this obvious."
"And you failed," Jungkook said proudly.
Taehyung groaned. "You're never letting that go, are you?"
"Never."
Then Jungkook reached out slowly-
Giving Taehyung enough time to pull away if he wanted.
But Taehyung didn't.
Jungkook's fingers brushed gently against his wrist before sliding into his hand.
Warm.
Careful.
Real.
Taehyung looked down at their hands for a second like he couldn't fully process it.
Then back at Jungkook.
Who was already looking at him like he was the answer to something.
"You know," Jungkook said quietly, "out of all the ways I imagined you confessing to me..."
Taehyung covered his face with his free hand immediately. "Please stop talking."
"...accidentally exposing yourself to the group chat wasn't one of them."
"I'm leaving."
Jungkook laughed and caught his sleeve before he could escape.
Taehyung tried to look offended.
Failed miserably when Jungkook smiled at him again.
God.
That smile.
The exact smile that started this entire disaster.
Taehyung shook his head softly. "I can't believe this actually happened."
Jungkook squeezed his hand once.
"I can."
Taehyung frowned slightly. "What does that mean?"
Jungkook looked at him for a long moment before answering.
"It means," he said quietly, "I think some people are supposed to find each other eventually."
Taehyung's heart genuinely stuttered.
Because Jungkook said it so simply.
So honestly.
Like it had always been true.
The teasing faded after that.
The nervousness too.
Leaving only this warm, quiet feeling between them.
Comfortable.
Certain.
Jungkook glanced toward Taehyung's still-open bedroom door before looking back at him with a small grin.
"So..."
Taehyung narrowed his eyes immediately. "Why do I feel like you're about to say something annoying?"
Jungkook's grin widened.
"You still never told me what exactly about my smile made you forget the choreography."
Taehyung stared at him for two seconds.
Then burst into helpless laughter.
Jungkook laughed too.
And somehow that felt even more intimate than the confession itself.
Taehyung shook his head, smiling helplessly as he stepped closer on his own this time.
Close enough that Jungkook's teasing expression softened immediately.
Close enough that their foreheads almost touched.
"You talk too much," Taehyung whispered.
Jungkook smiled gently. "But you like listening."
Unfortunately-
That was true too.
Taehyung looked at him for one quiet moment longer before finally mumbling:
"...Your smile looks like it knows secrets."
Jungkook blinked softly.
Caught off guard for once.
Taehyung continued before he could lose courage.
"And every time you smile at me..." he admitted quietly, "it feels like you already know."
Jungkook's eyes softened in a way that completely ruined Taehyung.
Then he leaned in just enough for his voice to turn into a whisper between them.
"I do know."
Taehyung's breath caught.
Jungkook smiled one last time-
Warm.
Fond.
Certain.
"Because you look at me," he whispered, "like I'm someone you could love for a very long time."
