My mother died on a Tuesday, and by Friday, my sister had taken everything.
The house, the jewelry, the antique dining table we'd eaten at as children. She stood in the lawyer's office with her husband—my husband, once and nodded while the will was read aloud, her hand resting on the swell of her pregnant belly. I sat across the table, alone, watching the man I'd married divide my mother's life between himself and the woman he'd left me for.
"To my daughter Claire," the lawyer read, "I leave the contents of the safety deposit box at First Mercantile Bank."
My sister, Elena, didn't even look up. She was too busy counting silverware in her head.
The safety deposit box contained a single envelope. Inside the envelope was a photograph and a letter. The photograph showed my mother at twenty-three, standing beside a man who was not my father. The letter, in my mother's handwriting, began: If you're reading this, I'm gone, and I need you to finish what I couldn't.
I read the letter three times in the bank's cold lobby. Then I folded it carefully, placed it in my coat pocket, and began to plan.
The man in the photograph was named Arthur Vance. He was seventy-one years old and lived in a sprawling estate two hours north of the city. He had never married. He had no children. He had, according to my mother's letter, loved her desperately for one summer in 1976, and then left her for a woman with a richer father and a weaker spine. My mother had carried the wound of him for forty years. She had kept his photograph in a locked box and never spoken his name.
He's rich now, the letter said. Obscenely rich. And he's lonely. I want you to take from him what he took from me a future.
The letter didn't ask. It instructed. My mother, even from the grave, knew exactly what I was capable of.

I arrived at Arthur Vance's estate on a Sunday afternoon, wearing a dress the color of forget-me-nots and carrying a story I'd rehearsed until it tasted like truth. I was a graduate student researching mid-century architecture. I'd read about his home in a historical society newsletter. Could I possibly trouble him for a tour?
He was tall and silver-haired and still handsome in the way old money preserves men. He invited me in for tea. By the end of the afternoon, he'd offered me a job cataloging his library.
Within six weeks, I was dining with him three times a week. Within three months, he was introducing me to his friends as "my dear friend Claire." Within six months, he had rewritten his will.
I never lied to him. I never pretended to love him. I simply became indispensable the daughter he'd never had, the confidante he'd always wanted, the audience for every story he'd told a hundred times and never tired of telling. He was lonely. I was available. Loneliness is a currency, and I spent it carefully.
The night before the new will was signed, I sat in the guest bedroom he'd given me and looked at my mother's photograph. "Almost done," I whispered.

She appeared on my doorstep my doorstep, the one attached to the estate I now owned—with her baby on her hip and her husband trailing behind her like a dog that had been kicked once and never recovered. The divorce had been swift and cruel. She'd gotten the house, the furniture, the reputation of a wronged wife. But she'd made one mistake: she'd married a man who was only faithful until someone richer came along. And someone had. Just not her.
"Claire," she said, her voice thin and desperate. "I need help. Please. For the baby."
I stood in the doorway of Arthur Vance's mansion my mansion and looked at my sister. She had our mother's eyes. She had our mother's hunger. She had taken everything from me three years ago without a second thought, and now she was asking for mercy from the one person who had learned, finally, not to give it.
I thought about my mother's letter. I thought about the photograph. I thought about Elena standing in the lawyer's office, pregnant with my husband's child, not meeting my eyes while she stole my life.
"Please," she said again.
I opened the door wider. I smiled. I said, "Come in. Let's talk about what you can have."
And I led her into the house where I would spend the rest of my life reminding her, in small and endless ways, that everything she now received every meal, every warm bed, every moment of safety came from the sister she had wronged.
The baby cooed. My ex-husband wouldn't look at me. Elena clutched my hand and wept with gratitude.
I let her.
My mother had wanted revenge on one man. But I had learned something she never did: revenge is not a single blow. Revenge is a house you build around someone, room by room, until they forget there was ever a door.
