The contract sat heavy on the polished table crisp black text on cream paper, no room for questions or second thoughts. Two names waited to be signed: Damon Reyes and [Your Name].
“This isn’t a choice,” Damon’s father said, pushing a pen forward. “It’s necessary.”
Across from him, you sat beside your parent, reading the words again, marriage to strengthen business ties… joint assets… public partnership. It might as well have been a corporate merger.
When your eyes met Damon’s, you saw it all: the rebellious fire in his gaze, and underneath, the same fear that twisted in your chest. He shook his head almost imperceptibly.
I don’t want this either. But there was only one path forward. Damon signed first, his signature sharp with defiance.
He slides the paper to you, and your hand trembled as you wrote your name, sealing a deal that would bind you both.
This wasn’t love or friendship. It was a marriage of inconvenience and neither of you could guess how quickly duty would blur into something more.
