Mara always heard strange noises in her old house. At night, footsteps echoed in empty hallways, doors creaked, and sometimes she heard her mother calling her from the kitchen. But her mother had been dead for three years.
One stormy night, the voice called her again. Heart racing, Mara went to the basement. The stairs groaned under her weight. Lightning lit the doorway, and there she saw a woman in her mother’s favorite dress. Her face was pale, her eyes dark and empty.
“Come closer,” the woman whispered. “Your mother is sleeping… but I’m lonely.”
Mara couldn’t move. The figure stepped closer, smiling in a strange, wrong way. Then the lights went out.
The next morning, Mara woke in her bed. Her mother was in the kitchen, humming like nothing had happened. But when Mara looked at the basement, the shadow in the dress was gone… for now.
