"Sorry, Xiaomi... I think..."
"What's wrong, Xiao?"
"Mom and Dad are arguing again... Mom said she wants to go somewhere far away where no one can find her. Dad said he wants me to grow up healthy, so he wants me to stay at Grandma's place. I'm sorry..."
" Wai...wait... Hey, Xiao, are you really sure about this? We promised, right? We said we'd grow up together... Then... th-then Xiao, I only want you. I don't want to be friends with anyone else. They don't understand me the way you do. Only you understand me... Please, Xiao... don't leave me..."
"We're leaving this weekend. We still have five more days together... But promise me, promise me you'll marry me one day. I’ll study hard. I’ll find you, no matter where you are. I will find you."
I’m Jing Fang, the heir of the Jing Family—owners of the biggest company in Jing City.
"This year, you're entering middle school... Are you sure you want to attend the school your brother built under our company?" Dad asked, with a hint of hesitation in his voice.
He seemed unsure—worried, even—whether I was ready to enter a school built under the Jing Corporation, a place my older brother had designed just for me.
"Mom, look! Dad's hesitating again," I said, pouting a little. "I'm not a child anymore, Mom...
The next morning felt heavier than usual.
Xiaomi didn’t smile like she used to. Her laughter was quieter, her eyes didn’t meet mine. We sat under the old mango tree near the school gate, the place we used to race toward every day. It was still ours… but it already felt distant.
“I counted,” I said, breaking the silence. “We have five days.”
She nodded, not looking at me. “I know.”
“I’ll make each day count. So you won’t forget me.”
“I could never forget you,” she whispered. “Even if I’m halfway across the world.”
We folded paper planes during break time, writing secret messages inside.
Her message: “Don’t cry when I’m gone.”
Mine: “I’ll cry if I want. You’re not the boss of my tears.”
She laughed. That was the first time she really laughed in days.
Then I said it again, with a more serious tone.
“Promise me, Xiao. You’ll wait for me.”
She hesitated, then held out her pinky. “I promise. But you have to promise me too.”
“I will. I’ll grow up, get smart, rich, and strong. Then I’ll come find you
The class threw a small send-off for Xiaomi. There were balloons, cheap candy, and someone even made a crown for her out of paper flowers.
But I couldn’t smile.
Not when I knew she was leaving.
When she blew out the single candle on her cupcake, I watched her eyes.
They sparkled—but not from joy. It was goodbye sparkling. The worst kind.
She looked at me, lips trembling. “Little Fang… don’t look at me like that.”
“I’m not saying goodbye,” I said. “Because goodbye means it’s over. And we’re not over.”
We watched the sunset from the old bridge near town. Our secret spot.
“Xiao…” I said, “If I could stop time, I would.”
She leaned on my shoulder. “If I could choose my home, I’d choose anywhere you are.”
I swallowed hard.
Silence fell between us, only the sounds of cicadas and the rushing river below.
Then she said, “This… is the last time we’ll see the sunset together, isn’t it?”
“No,” I whispered. “It’s just the last one for now.”
The rain started the moment her car left the driveway.
I stood at the edge of the road, drenched, holding the letter she left behind.
“I’ll be waiting,” it read. “Wherever I am, I’ll look up at the sky and think of you.”
I didn’t go inside. I let the rain soak everything. Maybe if it poured hard enough, the pain would wash away.
But it didn’t.
She was gone.
School wasn’t the same. Her desk, once filled with doodles, snacks, and secret notes, sat empty.
The teacher still called her name on the first day of the week. Out of habit.
I raised my hand and said quietly, “She’s not here.”
People stopped asking me why I was always quiet now.
They already knew.
I stood in front of Jing Academy, the massive private school my brother built using our company name.
Students stared. Some whispered.
“The heir of the Jing family…”
I didn’t care.
I wasn’t here to impress them.
I was here to become the kind of person who could keep a promise.
“Are you sure you want to attend your brother’s school?” Dad asked me again.
“I’m not doing this for the company,” I told him.
“Then what are you doing it for?”
I looked him straight in the eye. “For her.”
He went silent.
Mom smiled from the kitchen, drying her hands on a towel. “Let him grow, honey.”
Some nights, I still wrote her letters I couldn’t send.
I called them “ghost messages.”
Xiao, I hope your new room has a window that faces the stars. If it does, maybe we’re under the same sky.
Xiao, today I got second place in math. I want to be first. For you.
I kept the letters in a box under my bed.
One day, I’ll give them all to her.
In the music room, a girl was playing the piano. She had long hair and a soft smile.
For a second, my heart jumped.
It wasn’t her—but something about the way she played reminded me of Xiao.
She noticed me staring.
“You okay?” she asked gently.
“Yeah… Just thought you were someone else.”
Middle school was tough. Expectations were higher. Pressure was everywhere.
But every time I wanted to give up, I remembered her voice.
“Promise me you’ll study hard.”
So I did.
I stayed up late. I worked harder than anyone.
Because my promise to her wasn’t just about love.
It was about becoming worthy of it.
(One Year Later)
It’s been a year since Xiao left.
I stood at the train station holding a small paper crane.
It was hers.
I came every weekend, just in case.
Just in case she returned early.
Just in case destiny was kinder this time.
She hasn’t come back yet.
But I’m still here.
Waiting...
"I firgot to promise her that she should comeback, early as possible" i whispered to my self
