"Where you headed Traya? " I turned and smiled at my partner, or rather soon to be brother in law. His sparkling eyes a contrast to his younger brother's scheming ones.
"Demon hunting." Was all I provided. He looked at me, sensing I was troubled.
"You know. While not born from flesh, I'd like to think of myself as approachable. " He smiled at me. I send him a smile back. My stomach feeling like thousands of butterflies were fluttering around.
"I just don't feel like myself today, Thomas. " He shrugged.
"Can't tell you how many times I've felt this way too. "
"Is it the engagement? " He asked me. I shook my head, even though I knew it was a part of it. Unfortunately a union amongst reapers were solidified and hard to break. Breaking one would mean both parties involved were never able to find someone else.
He saw through my lie. Thomas was not unkind despite his horrendous reputation. He held one for most gruesome next to my cold calculating one. His brother Mortocai, was an enigma.
Unlike his older brother, my fiance was a little bit eccentric and rather... Full of himself? It's hard to put it into simpler terms. Thomas was destined to be Mortem. Or death. But I never saw him as a viable candidate. He was destined for something greater.
To be destined to look after the dead for thousands of years, did not suit the man. As reapers, or wardens, we had specific roles.
Granted our beginnings were nothing good, but we've been given a chance to repent through saving the human race from demons and other evil creatures.
What went unseen by the naked human eye, was happening daily. I've been keen to approach mediums and witches, the two sets of people that had a more spiritual understanding of worlds unreachable to normals.
Thomas clicked his fingers in my face to get my attention. I chuckled out of embarrassment, lowering the digits to see him scowling my way.
"Traya, if you're this out of touch, perhaps you should see Wisemam David."
I shook my head, not up for waiting in line. Gearing up in the locker room, giving Thomas a small smile as I saw him bend to give my boot.
"I'll be fine, this one last mission should give me enough credits to pursue the fountain of forgiveness. I'll be wiped clean of the bad blood running in our veins. " Thomas nodded, looking unsure.
"You've worked hard for it Traya... Just... Don't do anything to mess it up. "
"Me? Thomas I know your brother's line depends on my return... I won't mess it up, I promise." I wish I never uttered these words. For what layed ahead was only a brief hapiness but the consequences was a lifetime of sorrow for all involved.
Securing my belt with holy relics, I walked out the order with confidence, sure that my future would be secured after this missionm. How wrong I was to be self assuming.

"Get down, human! " I shouted over the clawing possessed human. The demon using her as host, was on a killing spree. I dodged another hit to my face. This was not looking good.
I chanced a glance the human man's way. He was panting, eyes wild and lips cracked. He wasn't the typical handsome man, but under the dirt he was covered in, I could tell his soulful was worth fighting for.
That's it! I pushed the raving woman off me, detaching a double edged sword from my belt. Bring it up in defence, I crouched and waited.
She looked me up and down. One could tell it was smart. Perhaps a thirst demon? Those were usually used in battles with the celestials. It should not be here.
I was about to move on when a pastor rushed over. A man I got close to since my frequent visits to earth. He was sweating as he and another youth came running over.
They each had vials with them. Seems I got lucky to be aided with Exorcists today.
"Thought you'd need some help!" Elias shouted over the noise. I smirked at him and nodded. Though we did not share the same faith. His coming from a different dimension, whatever he was capable of was far more helpful than the relics I had on me.
"Always on time P Elias! " he laughed while dodging a flying fist. The young man next to him kicked the woman, sending her to the ground with a loud thud. I winced at the sound.
"Benjamin! Not so rough with the poor lad! "
"Lady, it's a woman... " I corrected him. Elias looked at me, unconvinced.
"You sure? " he asked. Trying to figure out the person groaning in pain. With some words in a different language I watched as the woman stilled and relaxed.
"It gone? " Elias asked me. I sniffed the air for the well known smell of sulphur. Getting nothing, I nodded at him. He relaxed and threw a prayer cloth over the woman.
I walked over to the cowering man.. His arms immediately shooting out to protect himself. I scoffed at this feeble attempt.
"You should be thanking me instead of fearing me. " I said. He looked at me, and a stunning Hazel coloured eyes, shot with tears. Though crying men was always dissapointing for me to see. Somehow the feeling of butterflies had returned.
I coughed awkwardly. Handing him a handkerchief I stored in my pocket. He grabbed it hesistently. Using it to blow his nose. I grimaced, not at all amused that he used it for that.
"It was to wipe your eyes, but how nice of you to make things easier by giving me some of your DNA. " I teased him.
Wrong thing to say. If he wasn't freaked out earlier, he was definitely now. He took the cloth and ran it over the grass multiple times to get the snot off it.
I reached out a hand and gently stopped him from doing so.
"It was my stupid attempt at a joke. You can relax. Did you get hurt any where? " I asked him, not waiting for a reply, I had already known he was uninjured physically.
His mental health I was unsure of.
"I'm fine thanks... " He seemed irritated. I frowned. It would seem humans were too sensitive. I looked at the pastor and his apprentice. They were in a heated debate.
Standing up, I walked to the pair and told them I should leave. They nodded.
"Uh, take care of this one. I'm unsure he's all there. " I tapped my temple to indicate he might be a little crazy. Both men nodded and watched as I walked away.
Something urged me to look back. I did so with little force and looked straight into the man's eyes, a blue so deep, even Hades under the ocean failed to compare.
I gulped away the feeling that started at my throat. On no way or form should I be feeling whatever taboo nonsense I was feeling. Shaking it off, I walked faster to get to the portal.
Seeing the tiny Worden bench that would take me back to the order, I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Demon taken care of, human saved. I could finally take a break right?

Wrong. I was nursing a headache. The elders sitting around the table were all aggravating with their absured ideas.
I was unfortunately not chosen to be finally free of the stigma. No, apparently the human I rescued last time was at a point of needing a guardian of some sorts.
I rolled my eyes at the thought of babysitting a grown man.
"It's only fitting! " One shouted.
"She did what she had to! I think sending her back and refusing the service you promised goes against the rules. " my fiance seethed. For once I applaud his loud raspy voice.
"Sir Terius, it would do you well to notice you're in the presence of celestials. " an elder reprimanded.
I rolled my eyes. As if we hadn't realised.
"You do realise, our union is approaching, the last thing I want is for this to fall through. " I winced at his choice of words.
"What's the worst that could happen? Her fall in love with a human? Terius, even you should find this ridiculous." Nearly all the elders were laughing. Neither I nor my fiance found this funny.
" Mistress Traya, I'd suggest the faster you deal with the problem you could have prevented." Elder Ravo pointer at me.
"The sooner Sir Terius over here can claim you. " He said this in a rather disgusted tone.
I bit my lips, aware that anything I said could be held against me. Terius didn't care for decorum, the warden had stormed out, his robes flapping harshly with the speed he left.
I stood up from my seat, bowed in respect and left as well. Totally ignoring the scribe rushing to give me my report card.
Guess I'll be seeing the human again. His blue eyes still haunted me, and somehow I knew, this trip would not be like all my others. The fear of me dissapointing my kind weighed heavier than usual.
When I saw my fiance waving at me goodbye, I for some reason found my hands too heavy to wave back.
His frown was the last thing I'd ever see of him again.
To be continued!
