Maya slipped through the busy marketplace, her hood hiding her face. The market was noisy, full of people shouting about their goods, the smell of food in the air. But Maya wasn’t there to enjoy it—she was there to survive. She kept her head down, hoping no one would notice her.
A year ago, Maya had been Princess Seraphina, the rightful heir to the throne of Eldara. Her life had been filled with grand halls and royal duties. But everything changed when Lord Kael betrayed her family, took over the kingdom, and killed her parents. Maya barely escaped the palace that night, disguised as a servant. Since then, she had lived as Maya, a simple girl, hiding her true identity.

Maya moved carefully through the market, picking up what she needed: herbs for her wounds and a new dagger for protection. Money was scarce, so she often had to steal to survive.
As she reached for a pouch of herbs, she heard a voice.
“Hey, you dropped this.”
Startled, she turned to see a boy about her age holding out a coin. His dark eyes sparkled with mischief, and he gave her a lopsided grin. Maya frowned. She was sure she hadn’t dropped anything, but she took the coin anyway.
“Thanks,” she muttered, trying to walk away.
“I’m Alex,” the boy said, falling into step beside her. “You’re new here, aren’t you?”
Maya stiffened. “Not really.”
Alex didn’t seem convinced. “You’ve got that look—like someone running from trouble.”
Maya ignored him and walked faster, but Alex didn’t give up. “If you ever need help, find me at the old forge by the river,” he said before disappearing into the crowd.
---
For days, Maya couldn’t stop thinking about Alex. How much did he know? Was he a threat? She didn’t want to trust him, but she couldn’t deny she needed help. Kael’s soldiers were everywhere, and her life was getting harder by the day.
One evening, curiosity got the better of her, and she went to the forge. It was an abandoned building, covered in vines. Inside, Alex was sharpening a blade.
“Didn’t think you’d show,” he said, not looking up.
Maya crossed her arms. “Why did you follow me at the market?”
Alex grinned. “You’re not like the others. You’re hiding something big.”
Her heart raced. “If you’re planning to turn me in—”
“Relax,” Alex interrupted. “I hate Kael as much as anyone. He destroyed my home. I’ve been on the run ever since.”
Maya hesitated. Could she trust him? She decided to take a risk. “I’m Seraphina,” she said quietly. “The rightful queen of Eldara.”
Alex’s eyes widened, but he didn’t laugh or call her crazy. Instead, he nodded. “Well, that explains a lot.”
---
After that, Alex became her ally. He taught her how to fight better, how to sneak around without being noticed, and how to gather information. In return, Maya told him what she knew about Kael’s soldiers and their weaknesses. Together, they planned small acts of rebellion—stealing supplies from Kael’s men and helping villagers in need.
The villagers began whispering about a masked hero fighting back against Kael. They didn’t know it was Maya, but their hope grew with every small victory.
---
One night, as they sat by a campfire, Alex asked, “Do you think you can really win? Take back your kingdom?”
Maya stared at the flames. “I don’t know. Kael’s army is too strong.”
“Maybe,” Alex said. “But people need someone to believe in. And I think that someone is you.”
Maya didn’t reply, but his words stayed with her.
---
Their biggest challenge came when they decided to free a group of warriors loyal to Maya’s family. These soldiers were imprisoned in one of Kael’s fortresses. If they could rescue them, it would be the start of a real army to fight Kael.
The plan was risky. They sneaked into the fortress at night, but things didn’t go smoothly. Kael’s guards were everywhere, and Maya and Alex had to fight their way to the prison cells. Maya’s heart pounded as she swung her dagger, but she didn’t stop. Finally, they freed the warriors.
One of the soldiers, an older man with a scar across his face, knelt before her. “Your Highness,” he said, his voice full of emotion. “We thought you were gone.”
“I’m here,” Maya said, pulling him to his feet. “But I can’t do this alone. I need your help.”
The man nodded. “You’ll have it.”
---
As the sun rose, Maya stood on a hill with the freed soldiers behind her. For the first time in a long while, she felt hope. She turned to Alex, who stood beside her.
“Are you ready for this?” he asked, a teasing smile on his face.
Maya nodded, a small smile of her own appearing. “I have to be.”
The path ahead would be dangerous, but Maya wasn’t hiding anymore. It was time to fight for her kingdom and her people.
