"Madison?". I heard the teacher roll calling. "Present". I heard a soft sound, which was also loud enough for the teacher to hear. I looked back to look at her as her name sounded familiar. "Utterly gorgeous." That was my first thought when I looked into her deep brown eyes for the first time. She noticed me and smiled at me. I smiled back. But oh, no one's smile could compare to her's.
Her appearance was very different from the other students in my class. Her chocolate skin that glowed when exposed to sunlight, dark curly hair, neat appearance and eyes that shine... she got me mesmerised with just a glance.
I saw Madison walking into class. Her eyes seemed to be red and puffy. "Hey, did you cry?" I asked her while getting up from my seat to block her way. "No?" She replied in confusion. "Think, Anne, think! What would you want for someone to do when you're the one crying? Uhh-- Yes! I would want a hug!" I thought to myself. And then, without hesitation, I hugged her tightly and soon let her go. I didn't know why exactly I felt the need to comfort her, but I just did. And, that was the day we shared our first hug... the day my life changed.
After that encounter, we began to talk alot. On a normal school day, while I was chatting with her, I finally remembered our actual first meet. It was in 5th grade. Madison and I were sitting opposite of each other. We were the only new students that joined that year. The teacher mistakingly called me Madison and called Madison; Anne. It was quite the experience. I looked at her and I remember smiling at her... but she never noticed.
But things were different now. We became close friends. My other classmates also began to recognise me as her friend and her as mine. I began listening to her favorite songs. Not because I liked it. But because I liked... her. We were inseparable-- almost inseparable.
That's when a new character got introduced. A new rival, perhaps.
I stretched my hand across the bench behind me to reach her hand. But she didn't notice and turned away. "Whom is she talking to? Why is she s miling so much? Is she really ignoring me?" I began to have a never ending train of thoughts like these. That's when I saw her face- "Nicole? That's whom Madison is talking to?" I thought to myself.
I noticed that they spent more and more time together and were almost always talking to each other. I couldn't help but feel a little jealous everytime I saw my Madison with Nicole.
"Are you and Nicole very close?..." I asked Madi while playing with her curly hair. "Yeah, she's my very close friend" She replied without thinking. I noticed how her mood lit up when talking about her. That made me feel more jealous over their relationship. I began being more possessive and over protective over Madison. I didn't let anyone near her.
It was exam season. I was searching through all the classes downstairs for her. While in a hurry to find her, I didn't notice how late I was for my own exam. Then I found her. In a dark classroom, sitting beside Nicole, studying. I ran back to my own exam hall and began to arrange my things on the desk. Throughout the exam, I couldn't help but feel a little sad, seeing them together. I decided to talk to her a bit after the exam.
The bell rang and I walked out to find her again. I reached the basketball court and decided to look for her there. Then my friend called out; "Look beside the gate! Your Madison is there."
I went near the school gate. That's when I saw Madison... and Nicole. They were talking to each other, having fun and goofing around. Then Nicole bend down to tie Madison's shoe laces. They were still giggling and talking to each other. I felt unbelievable anger rush through me. I held the chocolates I was going to give Madi with a tight grip, venting all my anger on it. I hid it behind my back when I felt Madison's eyes on me.
I went home and couldn't help but want to end Nicole's life. I felt guilty as soon as that thought came to my mind. After thinking for a long time, I finally decided to have a chat with Nicole. I wanted to confess the truth. The truth that I didn't enjoy seeing them being so close to each other.
The next day, at lunch break, I went to Nicole. She was studying in her usual spot and I took her by her arm and led the way to the library. We got in and I closed the door behind us. As I expected, we were the only ones there.
"I'm sorry." I said to her in a cold tone while letting go of her arm. "Huh? Why would you be-" Before she could get a reply out of her mouth, I stabbed her on her waist. She fell down in shock and fear. "I'm sorry, but Madison... is mine," I said while I pulled out the knife. "And mine only." I mumbled as I began digging the knife into her chest. I violently stabbed her many times and vented all my anger on her body, which was spilling blood everywhere. I failed to notice that a classmate saw all this and reported me to the teacher. They were all shocked as they never thought that I'd be capable of something so... inhumane.
As expected, the police soon arrived at school and put me in handcuffs. But I didn't feel an ounce of regret. I felt truly at peace. While I was exiting the school with the officers, everyone stood far away from me. But knowing what happened, Madison stood before me and held my bloody hands one last time and asked me "Why would you do something so... cruel?".
I looked up at her with a numb expression. "If I can't have you, no one can." I said mumbled softly, leaving Madison in fear.
