"Gasp! Y-You... You...!"
I was surprised and couldn't believe my eyes while seeing the man in the dimly lit living room, gasping for air and looking so weak.
"You... Y-Your face, scales?"
The man in front of me look at me in the eye. His gaze made me feel uncomfortable and anxious, I wanted to look away, but for some reason, I couldn't.
After a long silence, he opened his mouth and spoke.
"Why? Is it ugly?"
His deep and weak voice rang to my ear like a melody.
I couldn't answer him.
I wanted to deny it but my words feels like it's stuck on my throat.
I have so many questions, but I just stared at him.
He's stubbornly standing despite his body trembling so much. His face is pale, cold sweats runs down from his face to his neck, and his voice is even hoarse.
He's clearly holding up, pretending to be alright.
I wanted to tell him to stop his act and rest, but instead, something else came out on my mouth.
"What are you...?"
As soon as I realized of what I just said, I immediately covered my mouth with my two hands, instantly regretting it.
'Was my curiosity stronger than my concern for him?'
'What if he thinks of me being rude? I don't want that.'
When I was about to apologize, he scoffed and look at me straight in the eye.
"You guess..."
What?
Guess? Guess what? Is he talking about my question earlier?
I tilted my head and looked at him with confusion. But he chuckled instead.
"I said guess..."
Guess? If I guess of what is he, will he let me off?
Then...
'What is he, really? Is he even human? No, those scales on his face and neck is evident that he's not human.'
'Those scales... They're not ordinary. Even I can't compare it to reptile's scales.'
'Those scales on his handsome face, it's beautiful to be honest. Even in this gloomy room, it feels like they're glowing, it's like... Like...'
"!!!"
I flinched at sudden realization and looked at him.
"It can't be. You're... You're a merman?" I said in disbelief.
He grinned.
'No way...'
He took a step forward and walk straight towards me, in spite of his weak condition.
I unconsciously stepped back but the wall stopped me from backing away.
Before I knew it, he pinned me in the wall and look at me straight in the eye, as he always do.
I could almost hear my heart beating as we stood closely to each other.
I look up, and for the very first time, I'm seeing his face close up.
I can see his face clearly. His eyelashes are quite long. And his eyes, feels like there's a vast ocean in it. It's pretty.
"Am I that handsome?"
"What?!"
I came to my senses after that, and realized I stared at him for a bit too long.
It's so embarrassing...
I kept my mouth shut and did not dare to look up again.
Silence engulfed the room. Only our breath and heartbeats could be heard.
I can't handle situation like this. I wanted to dig a hole and bury myself in it.
I tried to stayed still, and wouldn't dare to move an inch.
But he...
He lifted my chin up with his slender and long fingers... And, our eyes meet. For a moment, I thought his eyes shimmers. Are mermaid's eyes this beautiful?
"What are you going to do now?"
"Pardon?"
I was confused, what did he mean by that?
"Aren't you fond of mermaids and stuff? I'm asking you what are you going to do now after seeing the real deal"
He grinned and looked at me expecting to answer.
I was speechless and feels like my mind went blank.
"Answer me now..."
He demanded me for an answer with a frown on his face. And also... Is he pouting?
As I was keeping my silence, his face got closer to mine until the tips of our noses were touching. He looked at me with deep and penetrating gaze, and whispered to me.
"I'm waiting..."
My mind was in a mess, my face felt like it was burning up, and my heart raced faster than ever.
I tried to push him away but he won't budge. His face got even closer, making me flustered.
His body touches mine and I could feel his weight.
I unconsciously closed my eyes and diverted my head to the side.
But unexpectedly, I felt his head leaned on my shoulder, and he grew even heavier, causing us to collapse on the floor.
He fell unconscious.
"Hah..."
