"Welcome!" I looked up from the cafe's counter and greeted. The moment you entered with your friends, I could not take my eyes off you. You were wearing a school uniform that anyone could recognise; you attended the most prestigious school. It was extremely warm that day and you loosened your school tie and tugged on your collar. Gosh, you looked so attractive doing that. You noticed me staring at you and shot me a weird and judging look. I was embarrassed and quickly averted my attention to somewhere else.
"Hey! I've been calling for you. Are you even doing your job right?" Ah. What was I doing? Right, I was daydreaming. I turned around to see you standing at the counter. You looked frustrated and I apologised for my inadequate professionalism. You sighed and told me to forget about it.
You ordered two strawberry cream puffs, two coffee buns, one iced americano, two grape juices and one non alcoholic sunrise drink. I took down your orders and you handed me the money. Your hand brushed past mine as you did so. It made my whole body tingle. I had never felt this way before and I wondered if you had felt the same. I looked up at you and you were staring right into my eyes. You stood there for a moment and I stared back at you. You had such beautiful big eyes. Your nose was perfectly angled and your face was small with a sharp chin. You were so handsome.
"Umm..." I looked away from you when I started to feel uncomfortable under your intense gaze.
"Lucas! Aren't you done ordering?" One of your friends, the one that seemed to have mixed blood called out to you. You finally snapped out of it and returned to your table without saying a word.
"Here are your orders, please enjoy" I said as I placed down the plates and drinks onto your table. You were seated beside the one who had called out to you and both of you looked so close. I bowed slightly before returning to the counter with the empty tray. I would steal a few glances at your table at times. You were drinking the sunrise drink and you were laughing at your friends' dumb jokes. Your smile and laugh were so adorable, on contrary to the cool and cold aura you gave off just now. Though the super tall looking dude had dimples too, I thought yours were cuter. Your teeth showed when you smiled. Even your teeth were so cute. I must had fallen for you at first sight.
When you guys walked past the counter on your way out of the cafe, you spared me one last glance. I thought my heart stopped there for a split second with how you looked at me.
I thought we would never met again but I was so wrong. You started coming to the cafe more often with your friends. I was elated. We never really talked. You weren't always the one who came to order. However, I was contented with just being able to see you. I might have acted like a creep but I managed to eavesdrop some of your conversations with your friends. I learnt that you were a top student and that you enjoyed swimming and playing football. I also learnt that you don't eat bell peppers and love garlics. I also noticed how you always ordered orangeade and I wondered why. I wished I could get to know more about you personally.
And it seemed like god had answered my wish.
That day, you slipped a small piece of paper with your contact information into my hands when I was receiving your payment at the counter.
That was how we started to get to know each other and eventually started seeing each other.
We found out we were the complete opposites. You loved studying. I hated it. You were very realistic. And I was more romantic. You were a serious guy. I preferred to goof around. You had goals and I had none. I just liked to go with the flow and see where life takes me to. You didn't like to show affection but I did. You liked staying up at night. I treasured my sleep. We were polar opposites.
"Happy sixth anniversary," you smiled as you took my hand in yours. It had been six years since we started dating. You landed on a stable job and so did I, surprisingly. People actually didn't expect us to last long since we are so different but we made it work. How did we make it work? I honestly don't know. It's a miracle. I just know that we were so drawn to each other from the start. We're complete opposites and that makes what we have even more special.
"Happy sixth" I squeezed your hand softly and looked at you. We were seated at the roof deck of our shared house. We had decided to just relax and enjoy each other's company for our sixth anniversary. It was a good choice truthfully, especially after a long day of work.
"Lucas, do you know why stars shine?"
"Because they are like a powerhouse of energy with gigantic cores of fusion reaction that causes energy to be released and sent out into the universe as light. The source of their energy is nuclear reactions going on deep inside them. In most stars, like the sun, hydrogen is being converted into helium, a process which gives off energy that heats the star. The inside is actually millions of degrees and that warms the outer layers of the stars, which gives off heat and light." You explained. Of course you'd go for the scientific route.
"I expected no less from you" I laughed and looked up at the night sky once again. I felt you pulling your hand away. I frowned and turned to look at you.
"Lu-"
You were on one knee with a small box in your hands.
"Aaron Li , will you marry me?"
"..."
"Aaron-"
"Y-yes!" My voice cracked slightly from the overwhelming emotions that I was feeling. I could feel tears streaming down my cheeks. Ah... how embarrassing. I covered my face with my hands but you must had seen everything. You removed my hands and gently wiped my tears away. You then slipped the ring onto my finger and pressed your lips to mine. I smiled into the kiss and hugged you tightly.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
I rubbed the ring and grinned happily as I leaned my head on your shoulder. We were still at our roof deck, stargazing.
"Will you tell me why you always ordered
the sunrise drink now?" I asked and peered up at you.
Your ears turned slightly red and looked away. "It's embarrassing. Remember how the menu had staff recommendations? I saw your sticker beside the name of the drink so I thought you liked orangeade and decided to order it every time. Who knew you had randomly pasted it just because you were forced to recommend something."
"Really, that's it?" I laughed "You're so cute." I pinched your cheek and you flinched, giving me a disgusted look. I smiled.
You like cats. I like dogs. You have a thing for animals. I have a thing for plants. We are complete opposites but that is why it is even more special. It seems just like... Sunrise drink, the complementary colours that are completely opposite.
