The Last Day
Kazuki was a 25-year-old Japanese man who lived in Tokyo. He worked as a software engineer at a large company and enjoyed playing video games and watching anime in his spare time. He had a girlfriend named Yuki, who he loved very much. They had met at a cosplay convention two years ago and had been inseparable ever since. They shared the same hobbies, interests, and dreams. They planned to get married next year and travel the world together.
One day, he received a mysterious email from an unknown sender. It said:
Dear Kazuki,
I am sorry to inform you that you are going to die at midnight on Friday, September 22, 2023. This is not a joke or a prank. It is a fact that cannot be changed or avoided. You have been chosen by fate to be one of the victims of a cosmic event that will wipe out millions of people on Earth. There is nothing you can do to prevent it or escape it. You have less than 24 hours to live.
I know this is hard to believe and accept, but it is the truth. I am sending you this email as a courtesy so that you can prepare yourself and say goodbye to your loved ones. You may wonder who I am and how I know this, but that is not important. What matters is that you make the most of your remaining time and do whatever you want to do before you die.
I hope you find peace and happiness in your final moments.
Sincerely,
A Friend
Kazuki was shocked and terrified by the email. He thought it was a hoax or a virus, but he checked the sender’s address and found no trace of it. He tried to reply, but the message bounced back. He scanned his computer for malware but found nothing. He searched the internet for any news or information about the cosmic event but found nothing.
He wondered if he was dreaming or hallucinating, but he pinched himself and felt the pain. He looked at the clock and saw that it was 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2023. He had less than 12 hours to live.
He decided to call Yuki and tell her everything. He hoped she would believe him and comfort him, or at least laugh at him and make him feel better. He dialed her number, but there was no answer. He left a voicemail, asking her to call him back as soon as possible.
“Hey, Yuki, it’s me, Kazuki. Listen, I need to talk to you about something very important. It’s hard to explain over the phone, but please trust me when I say it’s urgent. Call me back as soon as you can, okay? I love you.”
He then packed his backpack with some clothes, money, and his laptop. He left his apartment and took the subway to the nearest station. He wanted to see Yuki and spend his last hours with her. He also wanted to see his parents and his sister, who lived in another city. He hoped he could catch a train or a flight before it was too late.
He arrived at the station and looked at the timetable. There was a train leaving for Osaka in 10 minutes. He ran to the ticket counter and bought a ticket. He boarded the train and found a seat near the window.
He took out his laptop and opened it. He wanted to write a farewell letter to his family and friends, explaining what was happening and expressing his love and gratitude for them. He also wanted to write a will, leaving his belongings and savings to Yuki.
He typed:
Dear Mom, Dad, and Saki,
I don’t know how to say this, but I am going to die soon…
He paused and looked out the window. He saw the cityscape passing by, with skyscrapers, bridges, cars, and people. He wondered how many of them knew about their impending doom. He wondered how many of them cared.
He felt a surge of sadness and anger. He felt cheated by life and fate. He felt like he had wasted his time and potential on meaningless things. He felt like he had never truly lived.
He deleted what he had written and typed:
Forget what I said before.
I am not going to die.
I am going to live.
He closed his laptop and put it back in his backpack. He got up from his seat and walked to the door of the train car.
He opened the door and stepped out onto the platform.
He felt the wind on his face and the sun on his skin.
He smiled.
He ran.
He ran towards Yuki.
He ran towards life.
As he ran, he remembered all the happy moments he had shared with her.
Their first date was at a sushi restaurant.
Their first kiss under the cherry blossoms.
Their first trip to Kyoto.
Their first cosplay was Naruto and Hinata.
Their first night together.
Their first anniversary.
Their first promise.
He wanted to see her again.
He wanted to hold her again.
He wanted to tell her again.
He loved her.
He ran towards Yuki.
He ran towards death.
He did not see the truck that was speeding towards him.
He did not hear the horn that was blaring at him.
He did not feel the impact that shattered his bones and organs.
He only saw Yuki’s face in his mind.
He only heard her voice in his ears.
“Kazuki, I love you too.”
