Chapter 1 - Birthday
Maid
My Lady? Are you awake?
My maid opened up the curtains, making me coil up, uncomfortable.
I always hate the sunlight in the mornings. It's so bright and hurts my eyes.
Maid
Isn't this exciting? It's your 18th birthday, My Lady!
It's my 18th birthday and today also marks my debut into society.
Skye Wynter
Wendy? Must I attend this ball tonight?
Maid
You could never miss it, My Lady! This is the most important soirée in a young lady's life. Tonight, you'll most likely find your future husband.
Not really... I don't want to get married.
I don't want to give an ungrateful husband children and lounge around all day, attending boring parties and putting on airs.
I hate this... I really do.
If only I could become an Imperial Knight... that would make my dream come true!

Your father is waiting downstairs for you. It appears that he has a grand gift for you.

A mana crystal allows you to find out what element of magic resides in your heart.
It can either be earth, water, fire or wind.
However, in some rare cases, someone can possess the magic of darkness and the magic of light.
Wielding dark magic is frowned upon but light magic can heal wounds and cure diseases.
While my maid dressed me, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of magic I was.
Maid
I'm so glad to see that you are in such a good mood, My Lady.
Maid
To think that you are now a Lady... I won't be able to manage once we part.
Skye Wynter
What do you mean?
Maid
Once you marry, you'll no longer reside here but in the house of your husband.
I won't be able to see Father anymore?
Or Wendy, or the cooks, or the servants?
It really breaks my heart...

Don't fret, My Lady! I'm sure that you'll be much happier with your husband than in here.
She's wrong. I want to stay here... I don't want to marry anyone!

That was before she died from an illness a few years after she had me.
My father was heartbroken but in order to heal, he devoted money and time to raise me up as well as he could.
Keeping me away from any kind of magic in the process...

I turned around and smiled politely.

Chapter 2 - Disappointment
I walked into the breakfast hall and gave him a polite curtsy, making his smile.
Reid Wynter
My beautiful Skye... Happy birthday, darling.
He put out his hands and I gave him a warm hug.
He then placed a gift box onto the table with my name on it. My eyes sparkled as I sat down and slowly unwrapped the present.
Mana crystal, mana crystal, mana crystal...
When I opened the lid of the box, my expression immediately darkened.
A beautiful emerald brooch glimmered in the sunlight.
It wasn't a mana crystal...
Reid Wynter
What's wrong, my dear? Do you not like it?
Reid Wynter
I knew that I should have gone with the topaz-
Skye Wynter
No, Father... it's just that I was hoping for something else.
Reid Wynter
Something else? What do you want, Skye?
I bit my lip and looked up at him. I know what he thinks about magic.
Skye Wynter
A... mana crystal. I want to find out what elemental type I am.
His face was the one to suddenly frown this time.
Reid Wynter
Skye, you are the daughter of Duke Wynter, the closest friend to the King.
Reid Wynter
You don't have to wield and study magic, dearest.

You aren't your mother, Skye. I won't allow you to practise magic and that is final.
He doesn't even want to hear me out.

You shouldn't be wasting time trying something that will ultimately be useless later on in your life.

I clenched my fists under the table and resumed to eating my breakfast in silence.
After that, I ran upstairs and threw myself over my bed. I wanted to cry...
I wanted to scream and shout at how unfair he was being but I kept it inside.
Mother's journal said that one's magical power is determined on how well you can control your own emotions.
I must remain calm and direct that anger to help me finish this handkerchief that I'm supposedly to give one of the suitors at tonight's ball.
I haven't even finished the the second flower yet.
I have enough time if I started now but I don't fancy finishing it.
I don't want to marry anyone!
I want to live my life and no one else's.
Maid
My Lady! It's the King!
My maid ran through my bedroom doors and I immediately straightened my back. What was the King doing here?
I quickly fixed my hair and put on some jewellery to make my dress appear less plain than it already was.
In the end, I made my way down to the drawing room where the King and my father were seated.
And someone else that I didn't know of. He seemed to be around my age with long black hair which was tied back with a blood red ribbon.
I entered the room and respectably bowed to the King like I was taught.
What did he come for? And what does he want?

Chapter 3 - The Proposal
King Francis
My, you look more beautiful than the last time I saw you, Skye!
Skye Wynter
You flatter me, Your Highness.
Reid Wynter
What are you doing here, old friend? And why did you want me to call my daughter here?
King Francis
It's about the plague...
The plague... Father has forbidden me to go out because of this mystery illness which sudden appeared overnight.
Almost everyone in the Capital has come down with it and the symptoms are brutal.
Reid Wynter
Yes, a tragedy to say the least.
King Francis
Indeed. Well, it turns out that a witch cursed our capital's land.
Reid Wynter
Surely you jest.
Witches are mages who exclusively use dark magic. If you're powerful enough, you can curse a land. However, the caster will succumb with the symptoms of whatever plague they have launched. It's the light spirits who supposedly want it to be an equal exchange.
Reid Wynter
What has that got to do with my daughter, Your Highness?
King Francis
Behind me is... Jayce Ember.
My father suddenly turned pale and got up out of his chair.
I've heard of that name before... isn't he the wild mage who can wield two elements?
He's a duel wielder feared by the Kingdom and the people.
He's feral and does what he wants when he wants.
What is he doing in our house?
King Francis
He can cure our land from the plague. Right now, it is just affecting the outskirts but soon, it will get to the nobles and eventually to my castle.
Surely he has better things to do.
King Francis
But he has a condition. He simply told me to bring him to the House of Wynter.
King Francis
I don't know what the request is.
Everyone turned towards the mage who was looking out of the window.
Jayce Ember
It's easy enough.

I'm not here to hurt you or eradicate your Capital. My favourite coffee shop is here and I wouldn't want to ruin it.
S-Seriously? He's not going to blow up the Capital... because of his favourite coffee shop?

Instead, I want something else. Something less valuable than the lives of thousands.
I could feel the chills down my spine that he gave me.
He then turned around and my eyes opened. He looked so... handsome!
I tried my best to remain composed but the way that he looked at me made me feel like I had no clothes on.

It's simple. In exchange for curing this land of the plague, I want to Lady Skye Wynter, daughter of Reid Wynter, as my bride.
